The inside is old and worn out. There is a hallway with wallpaper all over the place that has begun to peel off the wall. There is a shabby lobby at the end of the hallway with old stained couches and a half destroyed front desk. Nobody is there, but I can hear noise coming from a different room. My mum walks to another hallway in our right and gestures for us to follow. We do as she says and we walk up three flights of steps and stop in front of a door that has the number '15' on it.
"Here we are", she says. "Home sweet home".
She unlocks the door with a key and behind it reveals an apartment that seems to have been renovated a few years ago. We walk into a lounge room with a small TV and a coffee table with a few magazines and coffee cups on it.
"Sorry about the mess" Mum says, "I haven't been home in about two days".
"No kidding" I say.
We keep on exploring and find one bedroom with a queen sized bed in it and another with two singles. Each are bland with nothing to them but beds, except for the occasional small table or bedside lamp on them. There is one bathroom with a rusted shower head and a bath that is probably only big enough for an eight year old. We then head back to the lounge room where my mum has put out some plates and is standing by the microwave, waiting for something to cook. She pulls out a roast chicken, and puts some on each of the plates.
"Sorry about only having this much food" she told us. "But I don't have that much money at the moment" .
"Do you even have a job?" I ask her.
"Well I put in an application at a bar".
"At least you put in an application".
There is a few moments of awkward silence. Then I break the awkwardness.
"I'm going to bed" I say, and walk to one of the rooms without even eating dinner and lie on the bed. After about ten minutes, I decide I'm pretty hungry and walk back into the lounge room. I then pick up my plate, take it back to the room, eat it and fall asleep.
