Katie woke up first, she was wondering if in the last two years his habit of waking up late had changed. Unsurprisingly she woke up to find James still out cold. It was reasonable she thought, he was probably going to need his energy for today. Whatever happened with the doctors he needs to be prepared.
Her stomach growled, last night James had eaten most of the pizza without him. He'd probably want something to eat when he woke up as well. James always used to wake up when he smelled something cooking, it was hard to wake him any other way.
She hadn't taken too long to look at him this morning, but she hoped he'd be back to normal, whatever was happening to him was still unbelievable it had to be something like a shared hallucination or just about anything else. The opening of doors and the slow footsteps on the ground told her she would soon find out if he was back to normal. The smell of the eggs she was cooking must have woken him. It was unexpected when he came out of the hallway topless, confirming again that his body was female.
Katie looked up from the eggs she was cooking.
"Good morning, are you feeling any better?"
James looked like a rabbit in headlights. "Um, yeah, sorry I'll be back"
His top on this time, James and Katie both sat down for breakfast. It was funny watching James try to eat, his hair constantly coming untucked from behind his ears and ending up in food, she almost felt bad but watching her tormentor choke on hair while trying to eat felt like comeuppance. She savoured the moment, later she was going to have taken him to get it chopped off.
Organising a lift to the doctor's office with Katie's mom was surprisingly easy, they organised times, Katie asked her to bring her hormones and the baggiest hoodie in her closet. anything she had was going to be a lot baggier than what he had. With everything organised she figured she should talk to James and try to keep him calm if this was anything like her examinations for hormones treatments he was going to need the support.
"Hey I want you to be honest, how are you feeling about seeing the doctor today?"
There was a moment of silence, James looked down at his body again.
"I'm scared, dude"
The meekness in his voice was unfamiliar and it made her want to hold him as tight as she could and never let him go. She didn't know what made him crack, after all this, she thought he would still try and put on a brave face. All she wanted to do was assure him that it would be alright and that he would get his body back. But she couldn't know that and giving him false hope didn't seem right.
"I know this is weird but can I hug you"
James opened his arms up and she wrapped her arms around him as tight as she could.
"It's going to be okay."
It was odd, most of yesterday he had spent being sarcastic, quiet or vague and all she could do was hold him now, she wished she could just make this all go by easier for him. He let her go and after a few seconds she let go too, they both sat there.
"I'm sorry I dragged you into this K. I don't know what to do. I'm probably going to have to show them this body, aren't I?" his voice was shaky yet she could tell he was trying to keep the bravado he had yesterday.
"I think you will, I'm sorry James, do you want someone to be there like in the hall or the room with you?" She only realised how weird that sounded after it came out of her mouth.
"If it's not too much to ask?
When Katie's mum finally arrived James had calmed down, they tied his hair up and put his hoodie on, her mom wouldn't know what James looked like now, hopefully, that was enough to get by without too much suspicion. They both got in the back of the car; she didn't want to be too far from him.
