6 Years Ago;

Dani's POV:

I wake up smiling, in my warm, cozy bed. It's my 10th birthday today, double digits and I'm so excited. I run down the grand marble staircase of the pack house. I love the colours in the marble, it reminds me of the moon for some reason. I'm greeted by lots of warm smiles and hugs from my mam and dad, my 17-year-old brother Damian, his mate Ash, and my 12-year-old twin brothers, Derek, and Henry when I reach the kitchen.

After they all wish me a happy birthday, we moved onto presents. I get cash in my cards, a new dress, a board game, a notebook and an art set I had wanted. It takes an hour to get through them all, but finally, I come to the last present. It's a small blue velvet box with a ribbon tied to it, from my mother. As I pick it up and place it in my lap, I hear an unfamiliar feminine voice in my head, startling me. 'Hey pup! Happy birthday, what's your name?' the voice asks. I jump backwards in shock, dropping the gift box, and falling off the stool in the process.

My mother catches me just in time before I can hit the floor. I'm really frightened. Who is that? I don't recognize the voice and the only girl's voice I have ever heard in my head, is my mother's. So, this doesn't make any sense. My entire family shares a concerned look with each other, before all asking "Dani, are you ok? What happened?' I  brush it off with a small smile and try to distract myself. I pick back up the velvet box and study it, trying to ignore the strange sensation in my tummy.

The voice speaks again, throwing me off guard. 'Dani? I like it, it suits you' the voice says cheerfully. My eyes widen involuntarily and shoot towards my mother. She looks at me with a curious, but calculating look in her eyes, as if she's trying to figure out a puzzle. Surely, I'm just going insane, right? This can't be real.

After the presents and cake, I ask if I can speak to my mother, in private. I need her advice and guidance on this one and I don't think my daddy would believe me if I told him to be honest. Mama smiles and nods before taking my hand and leading me to the gardens. After grabbing a small backpack from the coat closet, we walk outside holding hands. I start to get really nervous. It's like she knows exactly what this conversation is gonna be about as she beelines for a bench.

"Clear the gardens and tend to your other duties in the meantime" she says with authority, loud enough for everyone to hear. I love seeing my mother act as our Luna. I hope I will become a Luna someday. I'd love to rule and watch over people, protecting them from danger.

"Yes, Luna" the wolves reply in unison before leaving and bowing their heads in respect to my mother. "Okay, what's wrong sweetie, you got a bad scare earlier, what happened?" she asks. "Mama, I'm scared. I keep hearing this girl's voice, but the only voices I hear in my head are yours, dad's, Damian's, or the twins'. The girl wanted to know my name and called me pup. I have never heard this voice before Mama, what if she wants to hurt me?" I explain, panicked. I can't come up with a single explanation for this myself, so maybe mama could help me figure it out.

My mother looks surprised at this news before she quickly composes herself. "What's the girls name?" She gives me a questioning look. "I don't know!" I cry. She wraps her arms around me and comforts me. "Shhh, it's okay Cricket. I think I know what's going on, but I can't be sure just yet" she says. Cricket is her nickname for me and has been since the day I was born. Strangely enough, she has never once explained the meaning behind my nickname.

Knowing I'm not alone and that I have my mother's support calms my nerves. I feel safer with her protection, she's such a strong, powerful and loving mother. I dream of being just like her one day. "Ask the voice who she is" she instructs. I am confused on what, who or where I'm supposed to talk to, but my question is answered when I hear the voice again. 'Hey Dani, why do you keep ignoring me, talk to me. I don't want to hurt you, and my name is Kayla' she explains sadly. I jump backwards in fright, falling. "You heard her again, didn't you?" my mother asks me, helping me to my feet. I just nod.
