We were in each others arms, spent and on the verge of sleep, but I had a thought that wouldn't leave me be...
"InuYasha?" I said softly. His eyes opened drowsily, the firelight behind me reflecting in their depths. It was like staring into blazing pools of lava. I had to take a breath to continue.
"Tell me why you couldn't take me with you...when you went home."
His gaze darted guiltily away. He sighed heavily before speaking.
"What did Kaede tell you?"
"Not much, just that it was dangerous. "
"Understatement." He intertwined his fingers in mine and brought my hand to his bare chest, holding my hand over his heart. His ears swiveled towards the entrance, scanning like radar before relaxing. "You have to understand this first," He finally continued, "my 'home' if it ever was, isn't there. There is a wastland where the castle once stood. The village, the farm land...it's all dust. There are very few landmarks left.
My mother would take me to this bridge. It was a fancy thing that was only built as an indulgence. When it was full, you could have hopped over the stream in two strides, but the ladies of the manor didn't want to remove their zori, and high born women never showed their feet, so taking their socks of was impossible.
The bridge was golden, I always thought it was solid gold. Later I learned it was some type of paint or foil. The rails were polished cherry. I can remember this one place where the grain looked like a tiger... I had always wanted to see a real tiger. I had seen them in the lords painted books.
My mother made sure I had access to books. She taught me to read, and I would read the kanji under the bridge to her when I would play. They were basic words of protection, so I always felt safe there. So safe." He was there, seeing it all through adult eyes. Remembering bittersweet clips of his childhood.
"Most of the path to the bridge is gone and the stream no longer holds water. There are no happy colors and most of the wood has rotted away. I went there the day my mother died and took her belongings that she told me to take. I buried them there, deep, and put rocks smoothed by the water, over the spot to mark it.
Time changed everything, but...
So anyway I found them.
Everything... everyone is gone like a dream. This is the only proof that she was real."
"That's not true." I said softly. He looked into my eyes, an inquisitive expression making my heart melt. "I see her love in your eyes, when you look at me a certain way. When you love me so much that I feel it gushing out of you... that's her. That's her real gift to you."
InuYashas chin quivered for a moment and he sniffed. "Dang it Kagome! Why you gotta get all 'love and understanding' on me when I'm already full of weird feelings?"
"Shuuuut uuuup." I purr out, pulling his head down into my chest. As I rub his back I can feel him take several deep breaths. He never liked to cry, but I was thankful he was able.
"So she's here with us Aisareru. In our love for each other, and if we have littles, she will be there too."
I felt him shudder, but if he cried, he didn't make any sound until he sniffed loudly. I kissed the top of his head, my favorite spot right between his ears. He looked back up at me. He had himself mostly under control.
"There are bandits, more now than villagers. On every road and path from the high kingdom to the Court of Miko. Nowhere is safe, and it's a week's journey at full pace. I didn't want to be there any longer than need be, and I damn sure wasn't going to put you in danger for a box of trinkets."
I held up the hand that was still entwined in his and watched the firelight dance on the emerald. "This isn't a trinket InuYasha. All the jewelry in that box is real. It could feed this village for four decades."
His eyes went wide. "You can tell?"
"Yes. The quality of each one... InuYasha, in my old time, these would be in a museum."
"Does that make them more important to you?"
It was an odd question and I didn't have I clear answer, so I spoke from my heart. "You wanted me to have her treasures, yes?"
"Keh yea, obviously."
"Why?" I waited while he thought.
"She was the most important person in my life," he said with a slight shrug, "And now you are."
"And that makes them important to me." I smiled when he nodded and put his head back down on my chest. My exhales were causing one of his ears to flick. I giggled.
"What?" He asked, his voice muffled against me.
"Tickles?" I giggled more.
"Ya think?" He growled. It was playful.
I blew warm breath over his ear, watching the short hairs stand as he flicked it again. "Quiiiiiit."
My heart beat picked up its pace when I rubbed the tickle away from his furry sensitive ear then slowly ran my tongue along its outer edge. I was awarded with a shiver.
"Kagome..." My name was mid way between a groan and a whine. He looked up at me again.
"What?" I asked sweetly, rolling my hips against him.
"Insatiable wench." He ground out, baring his fangs in a wide grin. I arched my pelvis again and he sank into my mating mark, perfectly penetrating it, turning my core into a throbbing volcano.
