I focus on the target ahead and release the arrow watching it splinter the wood down the middle with a cracking sound. I take a second to warm up my hands and then draw back the bow, but before I release the next arrow I hear the bushes move behind me and I turn aiming right at them and before I shoot Rainy steps out laughing lightly.
"I got you good!" She laughed more and I frowned knowing she should be resting after being sick for an entire week.
"Why are you out of camp you're supposed to be resting you know" I look at her with a frustrated expression, but then I calm down and smile a bit knowing a little activity couldn't hurt her.
"I'm tired of being cooped up in the cave while your doing all the cool things, plus I only had a cough and a small fever I feel fine now" She walks up to me and kisses me on the lips before drawing away again.
"Are you sure your fine?" I look at her still smiling even though I wanted to tell her how much I was worried.
"Yeah I'm fine but I told Grant I would help him in the Med bay today with anyone who comes in so I gotta go" She hugs me and runs back towards camp.
I then focus back on the log and draw back my arrow and release hitting it right in the center and knocking it over. I admire my work and get ready to leave but before I do an Infected stumbles from the bushes and I pull out my knife noticing all my arrows were in the log still. I slowly walk up to it and swing connecting with its arm and then I swing a second time cutting the other arm off. I then kick the infected back and wait till he gets close and I stab him right in the neck and then the top of the head. The infected falls to the ground and I notice my hands covered in dark blood.
"Wow overkill" Beta steps out of the bushes and walks towards the body of the infected.
"Yeah you could say that..." I laugh looking at the infected noticing I had cut the arms clean of and then I saw something else. There was white flurry's landing on the ground and it's body.
"It's snowing" I look at Beta waiting for a serious answer but she just laughed
"Well we might as well like it seeming it is the only decent thing to happen since the apocalypse started" She laughs a bit and I smile noticing she was right about this.
"Well I'm getting back to camp after I retrieve my arrows" She nods at me and I go and pick the arrows from the log and start heading towards the camp and she follows me.
"So how do you like being Gamma for a whole month?" she looks at me and I had almost forgot it has been a whole month since everyone cheered me as I became Gamma.
"It hasn't been easy but it's different" I nod and we stay quiet the rest of the way just watching the snow fall and before we know it we arrive at camp.
I take the steps to get in camp and it has gotten easy since I have done it over a hundred times by now. Beta follows behind me being quicker to get in since she has done it more.
"Well I'm going to fine Rainy and talk to her more see you later" I walk away towards the Med bay noticing i'm in a hurry for some reason and I didn't even listen to what Beta had to say.
As I'm about to step in I hear three...No four voices talking in the Med bay so at first I begin to think I should wait till later but then I hear my name and It is my actually name and not Gamma so it would be very important. I take the risky approach and ease drop and I hope no one catches me in the process because that would be an awkward explanation.
"Does he know yet?" I hear One's voice talking and I know that is weird because he only comes to the Med Bay to get ointment for his cut he got on a run for supplies a week ago.
"No and I'm afraid to tell him!" Rainy's voice sounds worried and very stressed which is weird because she was laughing and having a good time around me.
"Well you have to eventually" Mark and Grant seemed to say at the same time as one another I think I would have thought there was three people in there but Grant has a deeper voice than most people so I knew there was four.
I decided to leave but then I heard there secret and I didn't know how to feel.
"It's his baby though and you should tell him because he is going to be the father" Grant said in a quiet voice.
I decided to leave before I got caught but I was still stunned, I was going to be a father. The worst part was that the baby would be raised in the apocalypse and it would never be safe.
I decided to go along with my day trying to forget I heard anything and I headed to Alpha's room which was a side cave with a hole in the roof to let his fireplace let the smoke out of the ground above. I pushed the blanket out of the way and walked into his room seeing him at his desk in the corner.
"Oh hey Gamma come sit!" He sounded rather cheerful and I went along with it putting on my best normal face that I could muster.
"So did the supply teams bring back good things?" He looked at me and I nodded slowly.
"It also started snowing while I was training today and I also killed an infected while out training" I mentioned the snow because I wanted to see what his reaction would be compared to Beta's cheerful one.
"Oh well we should be fine if the snow is bad we have enough extra supplies to survive being stuck in here for a week at most" He keeps writing on a paper and I notice he isn't writing but drawing, he was drawing a sunny landscape dotted with few trees and a huge field.
"What are you drawing it looks cool" I say looking at the huge field
"I was drawing my old childhood home....Haven't been there since I was 9 and now I'm 45, I have told myself if anything happens that is where I wanna die...well with this damn infection it puts a wrench in that plan" He shakes his head.
before I can respond a yell from the entrance of the cave disrupts the peace of the atomsphere.
"Come quick the infected are freezing!" Alpha and Me instantly shoot up and follow the small group of people outside and I notice Rainy and them running out of the Med Bay to join us.
I forget about them as I look ahead stunned at what I see. The whole outside world is covered in white and down the hill from the camp is a bunch of infected but there not moving and seem to be covered in ice and snow. I then look at the landscape seeing how clean it looks and I then look back at the infected not knowing what could happen next.
I walk back inside and lay down deciding it's not worth watching frozen corpses all day. I start to think of all the things being a father could mean and come to the conclusion that I shouldn't worry right now.
I pull out a crumpled piece of paper and right down and important note.
"Winter is the new threat not Infected..." I finish the note and stop, laying my head back and trying to sleep.
My eye's close and the last thing I hear is the voices of everyone coming inside from the outside all sounding excited.
