It was a rainy night, as the rain splattered on the earth, leaves swayed to the tune of the wind, birds chirped in the silent night, and so was it in their household, silence, however, it was the silence before the storm. An austere Irfan sat in the living room, his eyes glued on the sleek screen of his cell phone, his hands trembled, as his eyes roamed over the what's app message, his vision became blurry as the chats of her and her past lover left him mystified.
His eyes were seeing what his mind was not ready to accept, it was inscrutable. How could she, she had betrayed his trust in the worst way possible. He clutched the phone tightly in his hands if only he could crumble the phone at that instance.
Why did she have to hurt him this bad, what did I ever do to you Nasreen... Arhggg!! he groaned in annoyance and threw the phone far away from him, it hurt too much, it was worse than the pictures...
The text kept ringing in his head... I still love you Habeeb, I will always love you, only you, let's run away to a place where it is only you and I, and no Irfan...
That was one out of the texts that made him cringe, let alone the flirty texts. He screamed again, hot tears rolled from his eyes freely.Nasreen who was busy in the kitchen, unaware of what had happened a few minutes ago in her surrounding, had just finished baking his favorite dessert just to please him and make him listen to her.
This was it if he shunned her again she was done, she was done trying, to hell with him if he couldn't trust her.
To hell with all the men...
She knocked on the door to his room, there was no response, she was about to knock on the door again, when it flung open.
In his eyes, she saw what she had never seen before... his eyes showed no emotion... "GET OUT!" He wanted to slam the door, but she held the door with her hand.
"Not today Irfan, you have to hear me out."
"I don't want to hear you out damn it, or see your dishonorable face, I just want to know why you keep playing with my emotions." His eyes were blood-shot as he spoke with anguish laced in his voice"What.. what are you talking about Irfan, why would you call me dishonorable?" She stuttered
"You don't know what I am talking about?"
"Yes, I don't know tell me," she looked at him at eye level not batting a single eyelash."You want to deny that you haven't been chatting Habeeb?"
Nasreen squinted her eyes in disgust. "Wait, what,"She couldn't believe her ears. "Is this why you are yelling at me Irfan, where did you get that from?""How dare you ask me such a question, first you sin, now you have the guts to shout at me."
He came close to her, and she trembled, the plate dropped on the floor in trepidation."What sin did I commit again?" "Don't act like as if you don't know, haven't you been talking to Habeeb, and who knows what else?"
"How dare you accuse me of such a thing Irfan, how dare you?"
"You think I would accuse you of something without evidence? how do you explain this huh?" Irfan said outrageously. He brought the phone and showed it to her, with jittery fingers she read the texts.. she was shell shocked cause she didn't write it, but it was her current WhatsApp profile picture, and even her what's app number, so all accusations pointed out to be true. She was disgusted when she read the text, how could she even text something as flirty and unholy as this: I need you Habeeb, Irfan is not man enough, I need a real man like you."How can you be so quick to believe this, this is all a lie, all these while you have claimed to know me, you never really did Irfan, I don't know what has come over you, I am not going to say anything to you, I am done trying to make you understand, but know Allah is my witness, you do know there is a punishment for one who slanders his wife right, I am done, sick and tired of this game you are playing."
