Breathe in.

Breathe out.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

The darkness used to bother me, back when I was first cast into this hellhole. The quiet would drive me crazy, and I would scream until my lungs felt like they were bleeding.

Now, I bask in the "peace" that my King has oh-so graciously bestowed upon me. The only sound that echoes through my ears is the distance laugh of an overly joyous child or my own blood dripping onto the ground whenever I get into what he used to call a "tantrum".

Whatever, if he wants me to be sedated and secluded, so be it.

I continue to breathe, counting the seconds down from thirty. It's my reminder that time still exists so I don't get driven mad again.

30... 29... 28... 27...26...

My mind grows numb, like static left on an unused television station. My arms and legs feel weightless, and I can take in deep breathes without twitching.

25... 24... 23... 22... 21...

Although it is peaceful in this place, the amount of boredom you can experience is quite honestly ridiculous. But after a few decades here, you find things to do. Most days, picking at my skin gave me the most enjoyment.

20... 19... 18... 17... 16...

I miss the days up top, or wherever that may be. Now that I've been stuck down here for so long, I can barely remember the names of the people I used to know. There's only two names I remember clearly. A few are more foggy. Maybe if I mediate enough, they will come to me one day.

15... 14... 13... 12... 11...

My head feels heavy, so I decide to take my sitting session to a another level and lie down. I might fall asleep like this, there's nothing else to do anyways.

10... 9... 8... 7... 6...

The cold ground below me is the most comfortable thing I know. I start to drift off to sleep, struggling to finish my thirty second countdown.

5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

A blinding light shines through the darkness that I have been kept in. It causes me to sit up from my position and shield my eyes. The light. The light is so bright I can barely take it. What is going on?

I grunt, the light making my eyes burn and water. It makes them impossible to open. Instead, I look towards the floor to follow the casted brightness of this new source of light. It still hurts, but my eyes manage to follow. After years of not seeing anything other than darkness, I felt disoriented.

But light. There is light. Why is there light? He told me he would cast me into his shadows for eternity as punishment for my wrongdoings. It's been so long. Maybe my King has had a change of heart.

I laugh out loud.

Very doubtful.

I walk towards this light. Could it be? Could something have happened with my sentencing? No, he knows "time away" would never change me. I reign in chaos while he thrives in order. Something is wrong.

The light gets stronger as I walk near it, but when I look towards it, it's not just a blinding light anymore. It turns into a barren landscape. Dead patches of grass and charred trees are littered everywhere. I have been transported here.

I remember this place. I remember it more clearly than the names ingrained in my memory.

I can't help but grin as my hand pulls a patch of dry land from the ground. I crush it in my fist, satisfied to hear the crunch of breaking pebbles beneath my hand. My grin turns into a delirious smile as I continue to look around me.

This is no trick.

This landscape was a battlefield between my King and I. Oh, how I have missed those days. The clouds roll above me in a dark gray hue, making it easier for my un-acclimated eyes to see.

But, my grin falls as I think. Why was this happening? My life sentence has only been paused. For what reason, I am not sure.

Why am I back at Raspy Hill?

The wind greets me for the first time in almost a century. I welcome it with a deep exhale. Fresh air was starting to become my favorite sensation. Strange, but becoming attached to things you have been without is easier when you have had nothing at all for a long time.

A sharp call rang through the air, a sound that I have heard before. It would be the shriek of a raven to most, but to me, it showed me that not all was lost after all. I smiled, looking into the scenery to spot a green dot flying towards me. The familiar sight of a bloodshot green eye came to my senses and stopped abruptly in front of me. The slime coating his eye dripped onto the ground, creating a puddle of green goop. His tail swooshed with anticipation. Almost like he was excited to see me.

"Oh, Sam." I greeted, "I can't believe you're still here. I thought he killed all of you."

Sam continued to stare at me. I stretched, excited to see my own pale skin again.

"What's going on around here? Any news?" I cooed in a high pitched voice, The pupil of Sam's eye showed some slither of green static. I grinned wider.

"So you do have some news for me. Care to share?"

Sam's eye projected something like a holographic screen in front of my eyes. I narrowed them at the sight that Sam was showing me.

"Hmm, looks like I have a lot to catch up on." I whispered to myself. Sam's screen moved to another scene, one of which that showed Dark with a woman. A woman he seemed decently fond over.

Just judging by the way they kissed one another.

"So, the King of Raspy Hill has mistress, huh?" I glanced over to Sam, "What's her name?"

The picture Sam projected shut off. He didn't know.

"Do you know where he is?"

Something new and white projected from Sam's pupil, something that looked like a portal opened etched into the ground beneath them.

I laughed darkly, the blinding light making my eyes water. It's not like I cared. The pain from being trapped in an eternal prison was more than enough to make most other pain numbing.

"Why don't we pay the King a visit? See what he's up to..."

Without hesitation, I jumped into the portal, my dear companion following after me. Once we entered into the light, the circle vanished, the only trace of us being my footprints in the ground and the destroyed remains of the battlefield that memorialized into a hatred so deep, no darkness nor light could snuff it out. An echo through the charred field rang out,

"I will see you soon, my King v̼̜̟̔́͠e̤̜̊̓̐ͅr̠̩͗͌͞ͅy̲͍̘̾̽́ s̢̺̱̺̍͌͗͠ō̢̪͇͉̰̼͉͔̤̻̮̥̖̌̅̒͌͊͊͗̃̀̑͊̚ǫ̨̨̧̛̛͕̞̠̤͍̜̥̖̥̗̼̱̫̉̎̌̊́̂̊̅͒̎̔͂͗͊̒̄̆̚͜͢͡ͅͅń͉͍̺͙̜͔͎̿̃̋̕̚͡͠ͅ ."
