Lightning Song hadn't woken up at all when Sans put her to bed. He figured she must have been exhausted. Sans himself was tired, too, and wanted nothing more than to go home and sleep for hours. However, even though he was tired, he knew he wasn't going to be able to go to sleep with so much on his mind. So he did what he usually did when he knew he wasn't going to be able to sleep.
There was only one monster he knew was still up at this time. One monster he knew would talk to him and actually listen. One monster that wouldn't think he was crazy and actually take his words into consideration.
Naturally, he went to Grillby's.
Sans was almost convinced that Grillby never went to sleep. He was up till midnight cleaning up the bar and was there serving people the next morning. Sans wasn't entirely sure how he could run such a tight schedule, maintain a whole bar by himself, and deal with annoying costumers. Sans included. Well, he wouldn't really call himself annoying to Grillby, but every time he adds onto his tab he imagines it must drive Grillby crazy.
Grillby didn't even flinch when Sans appeared in the middle of the bar. Grillby's was closed at this point, but Sans knew he was welcome at any time. Mostly because Grillby never complained when Sans showed up after hours. He looked up at Sans for a moment and went back to cleaning a shot glass.
Sans stumbled over to the bar and climbed into a seat with a groan. He didn't say anything to Grillby at first, and Grillby didn't say anything to him. Instead, Grillby reached from under the counter and set a ketchup bottle in front of Sans.
Sans looked up at Grillby with a strange look. Grillby returned the gaze for a moment before setting the shot glass down and reaching for another one. "On the house," he simply said.
Sans scoffed and took the ketchup bottle in his hands, flipping open the cap. "Why's that?" He didn't mean to sound so stern. Hopefully, Grillby knew he was just stressed and upset.
"Something's troubling you," Grillby replied. Yeah, Grillby always knew. He was one of the few people who did.
Sometimes Sans didn't believe that Grillby didn't know everything about a person. If you spent enough time with him, Grillby could pinpoint your exact mood just by looking into your eyes. That's why Sans liked coming here- Grillby was a good listener, and he observed. It was like he was quiet so he could observe people more so he could understand them perfectly. Sans had to appreciate that about him.
"That obvious, huh?" Sans scoffed and brought the ketchup to his mouth, not taking more than a sip.
Grillby shrugged, listening to Sans as he cleaned the next shot glass. "Wouldn't say it's obvious for a lot of monsters. But like I said before, you always come here after hours when there's something on your mind."
Sans didn't say anything, he just fidgeted with the ketchup bottle into his hands. He stared at the label, looking at the letters but not entirely reading them. He didn't think he could focus on anything with everything on his mind recently. He was thinking about so much and he couldn't decide on what to figure out first so he felt like just forgetting about it all completely.
"Is it about that kid you made a promise to?"
Sans looked up, but Grillby wasn't looking in his direction. Sans laughed and nodded. "You really do know everything..." Sans let out a long sigh and looked up at the ceiling, tracing the lines engraved in the wood with his eyes. "Yeah, yeah... I think it's all just gotten worse."
