Soulmate AU. Aziraphale is a human, while Crowley is a demon.
Crowley has been around for a couple millennia. He had a feeling this life would be different. His love, Aziraphale, was a human. Even though, Azi had a different name and look each lifetime, Crowley always found his love.
He drove through the country roads and tightened his grip on Zira's hand. They were celebrating their 15th anniversary, going back to where they first met.
Rolling to a stop, Crowley got out and opened the door for his beloved. In the middle of the field stood an apple tree. Not just any apple tree. It was the tree where Crowley found his love again and again. This lifetime was the longest he was able to keep his love as she was.
He opened took out a basket and set up their picnic. Zira stood admiring the scenery. She had a yellow sun dress on that complimented her curves. She wore her long blonde hair in a high ponytail that bushed out. Her hair was luscious, Crowley loved her hair.
He took a deep breath. It was time to tell her. He knew that he shouldn't, but he wanted to tell her how much he really loved her. He took out a large photo album labeled "Aziraphale, my one true love."
———
"Darling. I wanted to show you something." Crowley's hands were clammy. He wiped them on his pants quickly. He had done this once and his love had ran away, thinking him mad. The entire idea of reincarnation and falling in love with a supernatural entity, especially a demon, was a crazy notion.
Handing the album to his angel to open it, he looked intently at her face. She looked puzzled and read the title. "My dear. What is this?"
"Just open it. It'll explain everything." Crowley started sweating again. He noticed a look of unease in her facial expression.
She opened to the front page. It held pictures of a platinum blond man. He had baby blue eyes and a wide smile. It looked like he was laughing. The second picture was of the man and Crowley. They were sitting on a park bench sharing an ice pop. There were three other photos similar to the other two. The date, June 1968, was on the bottom.
She turned the page. It looked like the same man, except that he was in a hospital gown. He was sickly looking and was bald. He had IVs and wires sticking out of his arms. He was still smiling happily. The year read September 1968. A note was attached. Opening it, she read the last words of the mystery man:
To my beloved Crowley,
It seems that I will not be going home with you before my death. I am afraid that I am out of time. I want you to know that you made my last few months alive a dream. I love you so much. You are an amazing man and I hope that you will be able to move on and find another. I wish you luck with your business. I want you to keep the bookshop open for me. I know that in time, you will forget about me, but I pray that I might be able to meet you again in Heaven.
Yours truly,
Ralphie
Zira glanced at Crowley who was quiet as she read. He held tears in his eyes. She moved on to the next page. It was a woman with platinum blonde hair in a tight bun. She wore a blouse and an ankle length skirt. Her eyes were closed as she smiled at the camera. The other photo was her with her sky blue eyes sparkling. She had a birthday hat on that read Happy 20th! The date was April 1988.
Turning the page, she found pictures of the young woman. It was shocking to see the lifeless body in the hospital bed. There were stitches on her forehead. It seemed that the woman was in a car accident. Cards and flowers were on the bedside table. "Get Well Soon, Racheal!" was on an envelope.
Zira looked at the year, 1990. She looked at her beloved. "When did she die?"
"November 14th, 1990." Crowley stated. He looked at her. He knew she was a smart human.
It all clicked. Her birthday was November 14th, 1990. This was her past lives. "How many..." She didn't finish, but Crowley knew.
"Quite a few. I met your first life a little before The Flood. I had bumped into a young man, by the name of Aziraphale. It was an odd meeting, but love blossomed and soon we were dating. It was 6 months later that The Flood, the one with Noah's Ark, happened. I thought that was that, but then I met a wonderful person who was exactly like Aziraphale. I didn't know it at the time, but after four lifetimes, I figured it out." Crowley explained. He shoved his sunglasses back up his nose. "I know it sounds crazy, but do you believe me?"
Zira nodded slowly. "Yes. Is my death going to be..."
"I'm not sure." Crowley looked at the ground.
"Oh..." Zira wasn't sure how to feel about all of this to be honest. "What are you?"
"I am a demon. I was the serpent who tempted Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit." As he rambled on, he didn't notice that Zira was slowly inching away from him.
"Oh. I just need to wrap my head around all of this." She got up and walked past the Bentley. When she was out of sight from the demon, she ran.
------
Crowley sat and was wondering if he would regret this choice. After causing Racheal's death, he swore he would keep his love safe at all costs. He knew that it was a risky move showing her. And she ran, out into a storm and was in a hit-and-run. He would never forgive himself if that happened again.
It was about ten minutes when he started to get worried. He stood from his spot and made his way to where Zira was. Not see her, he panicked. He ran down the road, calling out her name.
'Shit. Fuck. Why did I have to tell her." He cursed himself, hoping she was safe.
------
Zira was lost. She must have taken a wrong turn. She looked down at her phone trying to get signal. Not paying much attention, she crossed the road. The last thing she was a large truck barreling toward her.
------
'What?' Zira opened her eyes to find herself looking up at a pale-faced Crowley. His face was in a grimace. She then noticed the windy environment. She turned her head to find that they were speeding through the air, a couple hundred feet in the air. She gave a loud shriek.
Crowley tighten his grip on Zira, almost dropping her when she screamed. He looked at her in shock. "Zira!" He made his descent, noticing her fear.
When he got to ground level, he put his wings away. Sighing, he scratched the back of his head. "I'm so sorry. I was going to bring you home and just forget this ever happened."
"No. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have ran when you were so open to me about everything." Tears streamed down her face. "After all these years together, I almost screwed everything up."
Crowley pulled her into a hug. "Let's just forget any of this ever happened."
Zira gave a slight nod.
-------
Crowley woke with a start. His heart pounded hard in his chest. He wiped the tears from his eyes and took in his surroundings. He was under the apple tree.
He didn't save her. It was three year since the accident and he was never able to find his beloved again. He should be happy knowing that they probably ended up going to Heaven after all these years, but he was angry. It was all his fault. He didn't know what he had until he lost it. Laying back against the trunk, he looked through all the photos they have taken throughout the years.
