Christmas had always been one of Y/N's favorite holidays, second only to Halloween - and only by a little.
It wasn't because they always had an extravagant celebration with lots of food while surrounded by relatives. In fact, Y/N had a very small family. No, Christmas was Y/N's (second) favorite holiday because of the general happiness between people.
Y/N loved their family's way of having a small Christmas. It was always just them, their parents, and their grandma, since they never had any siblings and neither did their parents. This lack of family members always made them very close.
However, Y/N had decided to move to a different city for a few years because things at home had gotten a little rocky. Yes, Y/N and their parents and grandma were very close - but since it was always just them, they got sick of each other sometimes. So, now Y/N was living 6 hours away from home.
It was scary at first, but they adjusted. They were even somewhat looking forward to being more independent. But, they were not super excited about spending Christmas alone.
Well, they wouldn't be spending it completely alone.
They had their beloved little dog, D/N*, who was a D/B**. Y/N got them for their birthday right before they moved out to keep them company. It was the best gift ever.
So, while Y/N may not be able to open presents with their family under the tree, they were certainly going to get something for D/N. It only made sense.
Y/N went to the pet store in their town and started to look through the dog toys. D/N really liked squeaky toys, and it always made Y/N smile to see their little dog squeak their toy nonstop while wagging their tail.
Y/N picked one up that caught their eye and squeezed it a bit. The toy let out a loud squeak, and suddenly they heard a thump.
Y/N turned around and saw a cat trying to run away from its owner, a fit man with long brown hair. He was able to catch his cat, luckily, and held it more securely in his arms.
"Sorry!" Y/N said, "I didn't mean to scare your cat."
"It's fine," he said calmly and almost sleepily, "Pickles gets scared by everything."
Y/N snorted, "Pickles?"
"Yes, that's his name." The man said, petting his gray cat.
"That's a really cute name for a cat," Y/N said, smiling. They held out their hand, but hesitated, "Can I pet him?"
"Sure," The man responded, holding the cat out to Y/N while still holding it securely. Y/N stroked the sides of the cat's face and the top of its head, making it purr.
"He likes you." The man stated.
"Yeah, I guess so."
The two stood in silence for a bit before the man said, "So, you're at a pet store, I take it that means you have a pet?"
"Yep!" Y/N answered, "A D/B named D/N. They are so, so adorable!"
"Do you have a picture of them?"
"Yes, but... my phone's in my car. Could I send you one?"
"What?"
Y/N smiled awkwardly, "Um, you know, give me your number and I can send you a picture of D/N."
The man thought about it for a second before saying, "Alright."
He wrote it down on a little slip of paper and handed it to Y/N.
"Thanks!" Y/N said.
"Yeah."
Looking down at the paper, Y/N read the contents in their head.
