"Do you have to do that in here?" I groan, lowering the window as I watched Jaque blow smoke rings from his mouth. He always smoked weed in the mornings and I hated it. Especially when he did it frequently and around me.
He chuckles. "It's nine hours of that shithole I have to endure," he retorts, blowing at the end of the joint. "I need this."
"You know you're not supposed to. People already suspect you were in rehab all of last year, what do you think they'll say when they see that you're stoned?"
"Well, frankly dear sister, they can kiss my ass." He says and continues to smoke his joint. I'm glad I brought my perfume, hopefully that's enough to cover the nasty penetrating smell of weed on my clothes.
I don't talk to him for the rest of the car ride until we get to the gates of the school. I looked around, taking in the unnecessary bodies of water lining the entrance, leading up to the front of the school.
"You remember what mom said?" I say as I get out of the car, straightening out my skirt from any wrinkles. He finishes off his joint before throwing it aside and blowing the smoke from his mouth.
"No," He fixes his shirt inside his grey slacks. "What?"
"If anyone asks, you were homeschooled all last year." I watch as Aubrey walks towards us, a smile showing her white teeth and her blonde hair flowed with the wind. She reaches Jaque and wraps her arms around his neck. I look away.
"Hi, you." She gleams, placing a kiss on his lips. "Hi, Jo." She gives me a smile and I force one back to her.
"Well look who finally showed up." I hear Esmer's high pitched voice speak making me look to see her walk up, her skirt a few inches above from where it's actually supposed to be. She grabs my shoulders before kissing both my cheeks.
"Didn't see you around much of summer, where'd you go off to this time?" I ask. I was already uninterested in the conversation. I knew she would only flaunt off her expensive vacations, I only asked so she'd spare me the awkward silence that would be sure to come while I waited for Madi to get here.
"I went to Cancun this summer to visit my family, next year I'm thinking big. Guess where?" She grins, expressing with her hands.
"I don't know, Florida?"
"You don't vacation much, do you?" I shrug. "Italy, my parents bought a summer house over there after that talk with your parents. They fell in love with the idea so they bought one and it's so gorgeous, it's right by the ocean you should totally come with."
"It's Jo, she won't be going anywhere else but to her bedroom. But I'm available all next summer. It's our senior year after all, we have to make it count." Jaque says making me roll my eyes. I sometimes can't believe we're even related.
We're twins, yet so undeniably different.
My brother, unlike me, loved to show off our wealth. He's also a major alcoholic and is severely addicted to drugs. I hate to think that my parents not giving him enough attention was a contributing factor to his downfall, but I can't deny the truth. Our parents are workaholics and once in a blue moon do we see them. And when they are home, they're busy with their vineyard.
Our home is their office, literally.
Seeing as Jaque got them off my back, I slip away, walking towards the bridge to look down on the water where an abundance of koi fish swam. Only a private school full of rich people would have a pond with koi fish.
I felt a tap on my shoulder making me look up to see Madi, my best friend and Esmer's cousin. "I missed you." She hums as we hug making me hug her back tight.
"I was so miserable without you." I pout. She had been in Michigan for the summer since that's where she's originally from and it's beautiful over there in the summer.
"Did you hear about the new exchange student?" She asks. One thing about Madi, if there was gossip you could assume she was the first to know about it.
"I did not." I admit. I did nothing interesting in the summer other than spend it by the pool, trying my best to reach myself how to swim. Unfortunately I have to retake swim class this year since I failed last year. Apparently floating is my only good attribute in that class. I didn't even know you can fail swim class. So you can say I know absolutely nothing about gossip.
Madi links her arm with mine as we walk. "He's from England and he's cousins with Thomas." Oh, Thomas. The school's drug dealer. "People are saying his mom got tired of him dealing drugs in her house that she kicked him out and sent him here." Even though I am completely against drugs, kicking your child out of your home for dealing them sounds a bit excessive to me.
But then again I believe in the radical notion that people can be saved, no matter how deep in they are.
"Maybe you should focus on passing your calculus class instead of poking your nose into other people's business." I mock her and she sticks her tongue out at me making me giggle. The bell rings twice, meaning classes were in session.
"Hey, Jo." I hear Jaque call making me turn to see him throw his lighter to me. "Be a good sister and hold that for me." He says before walking away with Audrey, Esmer and a couple of his annoying guy friends. I have no time to refuse this because he's already a good few feet away from me.
I huff in annoyance as I take off my backpack.
"You need to stop letting him walk all over you, he's such a dick." Madi scolds me as I put his lighter in my backpack.
"He's just doing this for attention. God knows my parents don't give it to him." I remark as we walk towards our classroom. Once inside, we take our seats right next to each other.
Class goes by in a haste, it was the first day back so the only work we were assigned was to take notes on the supplies we would be needing for the semester. Just as I was typing in the notes in the notes app on my laptop, there was knocks on the door making us look up to see a security guard with a sniffer dog. I forgot this school was the elitist of all schools, but it's also the one with the most drug users.
My brother being part of that group, they probably brought them here just for him.
Jaque you piece of shit!
He gave me his lighter full of marijuana smoke. How did I forget that they bring in sniffer dogs at the beginning of every school year? I would've thrown his lighter into the pond if I had known.
Madi gave me a look as in I told you so when the dog sniffed around, when he got to my backpack he touched it with his nose signaling what he'd found.
Shit.
"Hand it over." The cop says. I could feel everyone staring at me as I gave him my backpack.
It's just a lighter, it's just a lighter. I kept telling myself, but when I look up, he's holding Jaque's baggie with weed making my heart drop to the literal floor.
I look towards the back of the class where he always sits to see him with his lips pursed, looking elsewhere but at me.
For fucks sake.
