For the rest of the day, I found it hard to concentrate on my work. Images of Four's angry face kept invading every mathematical question I turned to and found myself unable to complete my test.
The rest of my classes went by dreadfully slow, everything seemed to annoy me, even my old history teacher's loud breathing which I hadn't really noticed before. I was angry, confused and sad all at once.
Why the hell was Four acting that way? I've seen him angry once before, but not towards me. Especially over something you can easily get over...I didn't know me not answering his text messages would put me on a mental breakdown.
I zoned out in every class, I'd usually see Four with his usual group and by himself in the halls trying to get to class, but I only saw him once when I excused myself to the bathroom. He was talking to someone at the end of the hallway and when I looked close, it was Esmer.
Four didn't see me but Esmer did and she only nodded to where I was and I went inside the bathroom before Four could see me. I waited in there until I was certain they were gone before going back to class.
When lunch hour came, Madi and I took our usual spot outside on the table and relaxed the rest of the day. I noticed Four with his group talking and he'd sneak glances my way which would usually make me feel butterflies, but knowing we're in a fight I didn't know how to feel.
"Want me to go kick him in the balls?" Madi asks, dragging me out of my thoughts to look at her narrowing her eyes at Four who was in a conversation with Thomas.
"No!" I say and she rolls her eyes. "I don't need anymore drama."
"You're no fun." She sighs and rests her hand on her chin in a bored state. "By the way, I asked Esmer about what happened and she says she doesn't remember."
"But what about what she said earlier?" So, I see her talking to Four and now all of a sudden she doesn't remember? Very convenient.
Madi shrugs her shoulders. "She said she was high and she must've imagined it. I don't believe her for a second but what can you do?"
"I saw her talking to Four today, just them two." I point out and Madi gives me her full attention.
"Do you think he told her not to say anything?"
"I'd like to say no but after he lied to me, I don't even know to be honest." Madi looks from me to Four who looks at me before leaving with his group of friends and soon, the bell is ringing. My last two classes go by smoothly before it's time for my swimming class.
Madi and I change into our bathing suits before going towards the pool. Most of the girls in the class didn't want to participate today in the lessons so it was only about five of us in the room.
I fix my goggles on my eyes and take my spot next to Madi and this other girl who's always pretty quiet in the class. "I'm just saying, if Four ever cheats on you I'm fighting him." She says from her starting position.
I let out a small but sincere laugh and when the coach blows her whistle, we dive in the water with a big splash. The water was excessively cold today but my muscles soon got used to it as we swam from the start to the end of the pool. I liked to think I was getting a bit better at swimming, but I still very obviously needed more practice.
We do about ten laps before the class is over with and we're going back to the lockers to change. I remove the cap from my head, allowing my hair to fall down my shoulders before I go into a stall and change.
As I was closing the door behind me, I see someone leave the lockers. "Hey, Jo?" Madi says as I hear her zip up her backpack and shut her locker.
"Yeah?" I say as I peel off the wet swimsuit from my body and use the towel to dry myself.
