"I think this is far enough." I comment as we reach some big boulders and what appeared to be rocks surrounding ashes of an old fire that's probably about two days old.
"We're not that far. A minute from there to here at least." He reassures as he puts the wood he'd been carrying down. I sit down at one of the rocks and wrap my throw blanket around me to heat myself up from the cold ocean wind.
After arriving, Four insisted that we separated from the group because he wanted to be in a quiet place. The rest of the students brought Bluetooth speakers and were playing loud music.
I also noticed Four gave Thomas and Zach the backpack back before we went away. I watch as Four lights the leaves and places wood over it and in just a matter of seconds, we have a campfire.
"You're good at this." I say, putting my hands towards it to warm them up. He chuckles and sits down next to me. He was now wearing a black hoodie and had the hood over his head, covering his curls though a few stuck out.
"I know." He replies back smugly making me shove him a bit. "This is fun." He looks around. "Thanks for inviting me, although we could've done something else."
"Oh, please." I roll my eyes. "This is so much better. Besides, the school's bonfires are always at school. Sometimes you've got to take advantage of what you get."
"Right," he mutters. He stays quiet as he looks to the fire. His face is lit up by it, allowing me to see his pupils were dilated and the black hoodie he wore was scrunched up at his hands. His hair was being held back by the hood.
"Right." I repeat, sitting up. Things get too quiet for me to bare it making me say the first thing that was on my mind. "Why are you intrigued?" I ask.
He looks up, confusion etched on his face for a while before he seems to remember. "Um," he licks his lips. "If I say, you'd think it'd be cliche as shit." He chuckles.
"Just say." I push with a playful roll of my eyes.
He locks my gaze with his before placing his cheek on his palm and putting the other under it. "You're just different."
"Oh my god." I groan with a annoyed laugh. "Of course, you'd say that."
"See, I told you." He cackles. "I'm intrigued because you're not like anyone else. You're not tied down by the usual snob behavior, you actually have a personality." He says making me place the blanket over my head.
"So you like me because I'm not like most girls?" I scrunch my nose making him grin.
"Well I didn't say like." He says before catching onto it. "I mean—not that I don't, it's just that word seems so childish and overused."
"Ah," I nod. "So I intrigue you." I smirk making him shove me lightly. "You intrigue me too." I admit. "Although I'm sure you knew that already."
"Yeah, the constant staring gave it away." He mocks making me blush.
"I mean it. And it's weird, you know? I've never actually liked anyone before. I mean, when I first saw you I thought you were the most annoying person alive." I say. "I still do, but not as much."
He rolls his eyes with a faint smile, looking away from me towards the fire whilst he plays with his fingers. He seems a bit off today. I take it upon myself, gaining all the guts I could muster up to scoot myself closer to him.
He doesn't say anything, doesn't do anything making me sway from side to side, the sound of the waves crashing and the faint music from the guys on the other side and the cracking of the fire being the only noise.
"What's your favorite color?" He asks out of nowhere, kind of taking me aback.
I purse my lips. This was a very childish question but I guess this is better than silence. "Yellow." I say with a smile.
"And why's that?" He continues making me sit up.
I didn't understand why my favorite color was important, but I answer anyway. "It's a happy color." I shrug. "When I think about it, it makes me think of the sun at the beach, bright days. Sunflowers. Happiness."
He nods. "What color would you say today is?" He asks another question.
I look around. "Yellow." I grin making him chuckle. "I am very happy in this moment." More than I've been before.
"I like you, Jo." He says after a while making my heart skip. He turns his head, his eyes locking with mine before briefly looking down to my lips.
My stomach drops as I see him slowly leaning in and right as we were about to kiss, Thomas and Zach appear. "Fucks sake." Four grumbles and quickly leans away. I see them motion for him to go with them. "Um, I'll be right back. Stay here." He says before he takes off.
Once he's out of sight, I let out a breath that I've been holding in since he stated that he liked me too. My hands reach the hem of my hoodie before I peel it off and do the same with my jeans, leaving me in my red bikini I brought along.
I wasn't planning on getting in the water because I usually hate having the salty water on my hair and then getting sand stuck to me, but I wanted the waves to swallow me at the moment.
My arms hug me, it was sunny and windy but the water was freezing cold. My feet kept getting poked with broken sea shells yet I didn't care as I went inside, submerging myself before I come back up for air.
I stay in the water for a few minutes until I see Four start to walk back. I grab my towel off the boulder and jog back to the fire. "Sorry about that." He says, putting his hands inside the pockets of his hoodie.
"Why is Zach always around?" I ask making him look away. "I mean, not to sound rude but he doesn't even go to our school?" He doesn't even look our age.
"Thomas wanted to bring him along. Where there's booze, there's a party. It's just his excuse to do business." He says making me remember Zach deals.
Which is probably what was inside that backpack.
I nod. I wanted Four to just lean in to me and continue what was interrupted but he doesn't. I also noticed Zach and Thomas looking our direction but when they saw me looking, they turn away and walk off.
Something about them always seemed off to me and Four almost always seemed to change his demeanor when they're around which bothered me.
"Would you like some strawberries?" He asks making me turn to see him holding a tray of strawberries, dragging my attention away from the suspicious guys.
I laugh lightly as I take some and we eat them in silence while listening to the sound of the ocean and the cracking fire as the sun was replaced by the moon.
