"This isn't you, Josephine. I know it isn't." Mrs. Dean, the principle says to me seeming disappointed. "I expected this from your brother."
My parents couldn't risk having my brother sent to rehab again, I knew the only way to prevent that was to lie. So I did. "I know," I say looking down onto my lap, feigning guilt. "What will you do?"
"All I can do is get ahold of your parents," Good luck getting them on the phone. "But since it's the first day of school, and I have a lot that I have to do, I will leave you off with a warning. Just because I know that it wasn't yours." She looks at me.
"How—"
"Oh, please. We've caught your brother doing more than just smoking pot in the bathrooms. Believe me." She says making me shudder. "You're free to go. Please don't let your brother get ahold of your backpack ever again."
I nod before standing up, I've never gotten in trouble before at school but I can assure you that it wasn't how I was planning it to go in my head. I had already seen her kicking me out of the school over something my dumbass, drug addicted brother did.
As the bell rang for second class, I see Jaque come out with his friends laughing next to him making me close my fists as I walk towards him, pushing him back making him stumble. "Are you trying to drag me down with you?" I grit, not caring that people looked at us as they walked by. "What were you thinking?"
"I wasn't, alright? I'm sorry. It wasn't like anything was going to happen to you anyways." Jaque says, waving me off whilst pushing his curly hair behind one ear. "Did you get suspended?" He asks making me back up. "No right? So don't even worry about it. Mrs. Dean almost never calls mom and dad and when she does, they never pick up. It's like you don't know them."
"Who sold it to you?" I cross my arms. "Was it Thomas? Tell me now before I report it to the police." I glare at Jaque.
"Yeah, don't do that." Kevin, his friend laughs nervously. "It won't go well for us, we owe him a lot of shit."
"Shut the fuck up!" Jaque elbows Kevin making me raise an eyebrow.
"You owe a lot of shit like what?"
"Nothing, Jo. Just leave it, alright?" His demeanor changes as he moves away from the wall. The bell rings for second period and he begins to walk away.
I will just have to get it out of him later at home. I go inside class to retrieve my stuff quickly, it was the first day back and I already skipped out on half the notes.
I situate my laptop under my arm and just as I was about to grab the pencil off my desk, it is being knocked down to the floor by someone's boot kicking the leg of the desk. When I look up to who it belonged to, a tall curly haired guy stood in front of me, a journal in his hand and a bandana pushing half of his hair back from his forehead. "You're in my seat." He spoke with a thick heavy accent.
"Your seat?" Who the hell was this guy? I had never seen him in school before. Madi's words come to my mind almost instantly. "You're that new guy, aren't you? The exchange student."
"You know an awful lot." He says, his face remaining emotionless. "I'd assume you know you were in my seat, yet you still seem to stand next to it." He retorts, not an ounce of emotion on his face still.
"I'm sorry. This is my seat, not yours." I retort, crossing my arms.
"In first class, maybe." He looks around. "But it seems to me we're no longer in first class." He points out, taunting me.
"Yet I'm still here." I bite back making him chuckle and set down his journal with a smack.
"And so very late to your next class, Josephine Clemonte."
I am taken aback by this. "How do you know my name?" I scrunch my eyebrows. His pointer finger taps the plaque on my white dress shirt, reminding me that I indeed had a plaque that indicated that information. "Oh, very observative of you," I look at his. "Four." I raise an eyebrow.
What an unusual name. "My eyes are up here." He mocks making me turn to him.
"You best tell Thomas to stay away from my brother."
"What are you talking about?" He feigns confusion as he walks around me and sits down on my desk.
"I know he dealt him weed. If you know what's best for you and your cousin I suggest you tell him to stay away, otherwise I will report it." I threaten yet he looks unamused.
"You sure you want to do that?" He mocks making me glare. "Thanks for the pencil by the way." I waves it in front of my face and turns to look at the front. I notice the room was already filled with students so I glare at Four one last time and leave the classroom.
Classes went by in a blur, considering we did nothing but take notes for all of them. During lunch hour, I saw Four again and he was sitting on the tables outside with Thomas and other people I didn't really know. When I saw him smoke a cigarette I grimaced.
I was glad when we didn't share classes, I didn't need people like him around.
