I hadn't heard much of Four ever since he dropped me off home after we arrived from the beach. He had left due to the fact that he had work and hadn't text me since then. I had left a few messages for him to make sure he was alright but when none of them were answered, I stopped.
I figured I didn't want to seem clingy, no matter how much I wanted to see him again. Besides, I've got dignity. Why was I so attracted to him all of a sudden? It's like one day he's annoying to me and the next day he's irresistible.
It's almost like someone flipped a switch on my feelings and now I'm hating every second and hour and day that passes when Four doesn't contact me.
I sigh and lay flat on my bed, my phone beside me as it stayed at ninety eight percent. I wasn't interested in using any other apps on my phone except for iMessage, but the person I wanted to talk to wasn't talking to me.
I hear my door open but I am too lazy to look up and see who it is, but by the way they enter uninvited I can only assume it's my brother. "Why so glum?" And I was right.
I hear his footsteps walk about my room, being nosey as usual. "Did you lose something?" I ask, propping my arm on my bed and laying my cheek on my palm.
Jaque nods and walks closer. "I'm going to need you to stop hanging out with Four." He says making me roll my eyes in annoyance.
Not this again. "Would you like me to do anything else while I'm at it?"
"I'm serious, Jo." He looks at me, his eyebrows furrowed in annoyance that only added up to my humor.
"If that's all you came in here for, you know your way out." I say, dismissing him and open my phone to see I still had no texts from Four.
"You don't want mom and dad finding out you're hanging out with a drug dealer, do you?" Jaque threatens making me look back at him. Is he serious. "You know they'll make you stop hanging out with him."
"Why do you want to make my life miserable this bad?" I sit up, anger boiling within me. "You can't control your own life, what makes you think you can control mine?"
"It's for your own good, Josephine." He says and I let out a dry mock laugh.
"For mine or yours?" I retort. "Half of your friends are dealers and users, Four doesn't even want to do that anymore. Why do you even want me to stay away from him, anyway?"
He has trouble debating within himself and at the end, he scoffs. "I don't appreciate you hanging out with guys like him, that's all." My phone begins to ring and when I look at the caller ID I see it's Four.
"I've got better things to do." I say, ending our conversation. When my phone keeps ringing, he shakes his head and leaves my bedroom. "Hey." I say into the phone, relieved that he had contacted me.
"Hey, sorry I haven't answered your texts. Things came up." He replies, a sigh following his words.
"I'm sorry I must've sounded so desperate," I say letting out a nervous laugh. "I thought I had scared you away."
I hear him chuckle. "You could never." This calms my thoughts. "In fact, I haven't been able to get you off my mind this past week."
As he says this, I remember he wasn't in school at all. "What have you been doing?" I ask, wanting to know what was so important that he wasn't at school or texting me.
Ugh, why do I sound so paranoid? We're not dating.
"My work schedule has been busy, I was training all week until closing." He replies making me hum. "I really enjoyed being with you, Jo. Sorry again about the motel."
I let out a small faint laugh. "Don't apologize, I enjoyed it too. We should do it again some other time?" I say, in more of a question than a statement but I am relieved when Four agrees with me.
"It's been a long week." I hear him yawn. "I just wanted to call and hear your voice." His words become slurred and his tiredness was adding a lisp to everything he spoke.
"Well I'm glad you did," I sub-mindlessly bite my bottom lip as I hear his breathing over the phone, signifying he was sleeping.
"Stay on the phone with me." He speaks once more. "I missed you."
And for the rest of the night, I spend it watching my comfort show while my phone charged on the pillow beside me, Four was still on the call when I decided to go to bed. He was on speaker and the light sounds of his breathing made me imagine him in bed with me, sleeping beside me.
I fell right asleep after that.
