After our little moment, Leo came out in a T-shirt and sweatpants and we had a civil discussion about our marriage.

It was no longer quasi.

This was the real deal.

I was getting married on Saturday.

To someone I barely even know.

I was gonna become Mrs. Costas.

Fucking hell, was I nervous.

"You know, the only reason I'm wary of you is because I barely know you," said Mrs. Costas.

It was Friday and we were in the kitchen because she wanted me to learn to prepare Leo's favourite meals. Leo and his father were making arrangements with Dad for the wedding. Hailey was out with Leela and Renae, getting bridesmaid dresses. My dress was already here but Mrs. Costas refused to let me see it until tomorrow, when I actually have to wear it.

Leo was right, she was actually a nice woman, just looking out for her children.

I smiled.

"I'll never hurt him you know," I said.

I meant it.

She smiled.

"Oh I know, because if you do, I'll hunt you to the ends of the earth," she said, chopping vegetables.

I gulped.

What a mother.

"It'll never get to that," I promised.

"Hailey tells me you're in the same course as her. After your marriage, you will continue it. I don't want you to put your career on pause just for the sake of wifely duties."

I felt my eyes well up. Most girls would have to stop and focus on being a wife.

"Back in Greece, the media painted me as some bad girl because I married a widower who was a bit older than I was all while raising a daughter out of wedlock. But then, I continued my studies and started my own company, independent of my husband's. Shut those idiots up. My advice to you is this: never merge your companies. Don't mix business with pleasure," she said.

I nodded as I took all of this in.

"Thanks for the advice," I said, grabbing the seasoning.

She laughed.

"No problem sweetie. You seem like a good girl. After all, you did piss Kane off instead of kissing up to him."

"How many people know about this?" I asked.

"Well, most of the business community. It's not everyday you hear of a schoolgirl punching a business mogul on the jaw. It had us all laughing ," she said, "I rubbed it in his face whenever I saw him."

I groaned.

Yup, she is definitely a Costas.

"Is that why Costas signed a contract with my company?"

She winked.

"Partially."

Oh dear.

"That aside, your company made a good offer to my husband. Kane is an idiot, nothing is sad about your empire. It never fell, it's simply rising," she said, patting me on the shoulder, "don't let Kane get to you."

I smiled.

"I don't think I'd mind being your daughter-in-law," I said.

"I know that you're nervous about being married."

I nodded.

"I am nervous."

"Well, I understand. You're my daughter's age and I can say for certain she'd be scared as you if she were to get married just like that. What I'll tell you is this, don't be worried. Leo is a sweet boy and he may be a jackass like his dad but he's just as loving and most importantly, reliable. What I'd advise you to do is to get to know the man you'll be married to before you consummate. Don't rush it. Understood?"

"Yes, I understand," I said.

"Your mom's in rehab?" she asked.

I nodded.

"Well, that's nothing to be ashamed about. Kane is acting like he doesn't deal with worse demons. I hate the way he acts superior to everyone. I wish someone would kick him down a pedestal or the Empire State building. The world would be a better place without him. I only tolerate him for my husband's sake. They went to high school together."

"He's a terrible individual," I said.

"Leo told me you dated his son," she said.

"Yeah. But that's in the past."

She shook her head.

"It's not gonna be in the past now that you took his sister's chance of marriage away. That boy is slowly becoming like his father. Traumatized and then demonic. You need to be very wary, not only of Kane, but of his son and his daughter."

"They need to be wary of me," I said.

"Nobody in this family takes intimidation. Welcome to the family Octavia."

I nodded and hugged her.

"Thank you Mrs Costas."

She squeezed me tightly.

"Oh call me Lexi."
