Insomnia

Don't see, don't hear, don't utter a breath
Eyes wide awake but squeezed tightly shut
The dark consumes it all
Makes you relive it all
Sleepfully waking with a cry
Kicking and thrashing
At the hands around your neck
But no one is there
And you're still dreaming
Screaming      with your lips sealed shut
Panting and sweating
The dark thrives off your suffering
Hovering over you as your mind drifts off
Waiting for it's new night of games

Curled tightly into a ball under covers
Sitting not laying
The bed lamp on casting off shadows surrounding
Eyes heavy      but unwavering
Scrolling through a bright screen for something to distract you
Time passes
Mind unable to shut off
Laying atop covers, counting backwards
Willing sleep come find you
Without its torments and tortures
But insomnia fell for you
Holding you tightly in his sweet embrace
Choosing to rather sit and be with you awake
Then to watch you in a more vulnerable state
Sleep

This harsh expression and heavy lidded eyes
Are not from choice or desire
These dark circles and bitter retorts
Are not from agitation, stress, or too much time on electronics
Could I sleep peacefully, I'd will it so
Rest sounds rather appealing
Though sleep haunted me with my past
And threatened me of not fearing my future
So insomnia held me tight
But now won't let go
