FRANK-
I was stunned to say the least. Zoe Nightshade. The Zoe Nightshade. Percy told me her story. She died when they battled Atlas, Zoe’s father.
“Get some rest, I’ll go on first watch” Zoe said to Hazel.
“Are you the only one to come out of Tartarus?” I asked her. She ignored me so Hazel asked instead.
“No. There are two others with me”
“Who?” Hazel asked.
“Get some rest” Zoe repeated, in that do-not-continue tone of voice.
“Ok” Hazel said.
“I’ll wake you up when it’s your turn”. After saying that, Zoe walked out of the cave and into the moonlight.
“What’s her problem? Talk about rude” Hazel hissed. I chuckled.
“Haven’t you heard her story?” I asked. She shook her head. “We talked about her at one of the bonfires”
Once again, she shook her head. “Ok. Allow me to tell you a little story” I began. “Have you heard of the Garden of Hesperides?”
“Yeah, that’s Hera’s garden in the west, where there is a single tree on which golden apples grow. It is guarded by Ladon, a hundred-headed dragon, or so I’m told”
“Yes, well, Zoe served there”
“Really?”
“Let me finish” I told her. She nodded. “Okay. Zoë served in the Garden of Hesperides, but she was exiled by her sisters after helping Hercules, trick Atlas, whom is also Zoe’s father Zoe gave Hercules her hair pin that transformed into Anaklusmos, which is Riptide, Percy’s blade”
“Cool” Hazel breathed. I shook my head.
“Eventually, she joined the Hunters of Artemis, and became their lieutenant to get away from men like Hercules. She held a grudge against male heroes, because Hercules gave her no credit for her clever plan for him to complete his quest on Mount Othrys and abandoned her”
“Oh, is that why she ignores you?”
“Yep”
“Anyway…” she trailed off, gesturing for me to continue.
“Anyway, on the Quest for Artemis, the crew – Percy, Thalia, Bianca, Grover and herself – went west to find Artemis. While in the desert, going through Hephaestus’ junkyard, a prototype and defective version of Talos attacked them, and Bianca sacrificed herself to subdue the automaton. Zoe felt responsible for Bianca’s death as it was her who picked an amateur Hunter who was only twelve for a suicide mission. She believed that Bianca had the potential to replace her, as Zoe couldn't be the lieutenant forever”
“Wow, that’s horrible. But that would be how she knows everyone”. I nodded, agreeing with Hazel.
“To reach Artemis, they are forced to go through The Garden of Hesperides. There, Zoe encounters her sisters who disowned her and tells them that they never had the courage, before waking Ladon. The dragon, after a while, sensed Zoe wasn't really who she "used to be" and almost killed her. However, when the dragon attempted to kill her, she dodged, but was still hit in the side. The dragon's teeth were venomous and the poison slowly weakened her, but she hid the injury from the rest of the crew”
“They found Artemis holding up the sky which she had taken from Annabeth. Zoe, in her attempts at keeping Atlas from destroying Artemis, was knocked aside by her father, causing massive internal injuries and big emotional injuries. Because Hunters of Artemis lose their immortality when they 'fall in battle' this defeat by her father meant she was no longer immortal and now susceptible to the poison of Ladon, which -”
“Killed her”
“When she died, Artemis turned her into a star constellation, "the Huntress," in the Southern sky. The form of the stars was of her shooting an arrow. Her death was meant to be because the last line of the prophecy stated that: ‘One shall perish by a parent's hand’”
“Yeah, yeah. That’s how I died, big deal” Zoe said, walking back into the cave.
“What are you doing back?” Hazel asked.
“It’s Silena’s turn”
“Who?” Hazel asked.
“Never mind, I’m sleeping” Zoe stated.
“I’m going to head out” I told Hazel.
Walking out, I discovered very pretty girl sitting on a rock just outside the cave. Her brown hair flowing in the wind. She turned around and offered me a smile. Her blue eyes glinting in the light of the moon.
“Do you know why the moon is so bright?” she asked me. My eyebrows furrowed and I sent her a puzzled look. “Because, Artemis has discovered the most amazing of news”
“Zoe is back”
“Yes” she replied.
“Silena?” a loud voice called from behind the trees. Looking around at my surroundings, I noticed that we were further from the ocean. I could smell the salty sea and hear the waves crash but the ocean was nowhere in sight. Come to think of it, neither is that good-for-nothing horse.Coming out of the bushes, a guy with hair a little lighter than Nico’s and eyes a dark brown colour - as well as skin - began making his way towards us.
“Charlie!” Silena smiled, running to hug the guy I can only assume is her boyfriend.
“Ah, you’re one of the demi-gods we found” Charlie said.
“Yeah, I’m Frank Zhang”
“I’m Charles Beckendorf, son of Hephaestus and this here is Silena Beauregard, daughter of Aphrodite”
“Hi” Silena said.
“Hey” I said, running my hands through my hair.
“Who’s the young lady you came with?” Charles asked.
“That’s Hazel Levesque, daughter of Pluto”
“You’re Roman” Silena said.
“Yep”
“She’s your girlfriend” Silena spoke, stating it as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Y-yeah”
“So, Frank, tell me, are you undetermined?” Charles asked me.
“Huh?”
“Do you know whom your parent is?”
“Uh, yeah, I’m the son of Mars”
“Ares” Silena said to Charles. “Anyway, why are you back early?”
“We have a slight issue…” Charles trailed off.
“That would be?” I asked.
“We aren’t the only ones who came back”. Just as Charles said that, three elderly woman came out of the bushes.
“Young ones?” one asked. Charles’ face paled.
“Medusa” he spat.
“Prepare to die"
