Devin looked at his phone in disbelief. Deafening silence filling every inch of his room. This couldn't be real right? This wasn't actually happening right? He found himself unable to process the situation as he stared at the now blank screen of his phone.
Jason couldn't be serious. All the insecure thoughts of Jason ending their friendship had been proven right..... unable to speak, he quietly lay his head on his pillow letting his long hair fall on his face. He cried. Not loudly, silently. Little sobs escaping as he let the tears pour down his face.
He was obviously ignoring the fact that Jason had a reason he stopped their friendship due to there being a small voice screaming that it was a lie. Jason had always wanted to get away from him. He had an even bigger reason to hightail after realizing Devin was gay. Lying just so happened to be the easiest way to leave.
He pulled an extra pillow to his chest, clutching it tightly. The ringing of his phone made him quickly jump up, and just as quickly lie back down. What if it were Jason calling to share even worse news? But then again... what if it was Jason calling to renew their broken friendship? He lunged at his phone, answering the call without checking the contact. "Devin! Thank God. I got kind of worried when you didn't pick up on the first ring. I know you always answer your phone so quickly."
Devin felt his heart sink even deeper into his chest upon hearing Christine's voice. He sniffled, "Sorry...". He imagined Christine's frowning face upon hearing his groggy voice as he wiped his damp face. "Devin....... listen to me. Jason leaving is shitty but not uncalled for. He would never leave you without a proper explanation and I'm certain whatever reason it may be is eating him alive." Devin nodded slowly as if Christine could see him. She was right. He shouldn't be acting so selfish, Jason probably had his own personal problems to deal with. "Chrissy...... do you have any banana flavoured icecream?", he asked quietly. "Six bowls of them." Devin could practically hear the smile in her voice. He chuckled lightly. "I'll be there in a few." He hung up. He needed to talk to Christine. After all, there was still something he had to confirm. He sluggishly got off his bed and slipped his cold feet into his nikes. He looked around for his coat. He really had to clean his room before his mother found out how dirty it was, his father won't be able to save him this time. Unable to find his coat he instead threw on his sweater and slowly made his way downstairs.
"Dev!", Martha said as she ran up to him. "I didn't expect you to come out of your room tonight. You want hot chocolate? Oh I've got the biggest bag of cheetos waiting!", she said going into the kitchen. "Its ok mom." He said, grabbing her shoulder. "I'm going over at Chrissy for awhile but tomorrow you better double those cheetos." He said playfully as he kissed her forehead. She smiled sweetly. "Need me to drive you over?", he nodded slowly. She got her keys and made her way out of the house with him following closely. "Where's dad?", he asked already knowing the answer. "Knocked out cold. Honestly, I swear he's a toddler." They both laughed as they entered the car.The drive there was filled with terrible jokes and sarcasm
"Good evening Mr. Bentley." Devin said quietly to the tall man who had opened the door. "Hello Devin, please come in." Mr. Bentley was the principal of the school and Christine's father. He had told Devin to quote on quote 'go home and relax' after promising to deal with Derrick. He was a tall man with a tired face and stern voice that could scare even the bravest of men. "Good evening Devin." Ms. Bentley was equally as tall as her husband and had a curvaceous shape and slim physique that made even the girls at his school jealous. She had this gangster persona to her which both intrigued and terrified many. "I hope you're okay sport. To have to deal with a little shit like Derrick is terrible." She said, patting his head. Meanwhile Mr. Bentley sprawled himself on the couch as he ran his long fingers into his short greasy hair. "Ay get of the couch and go take a shower!", she said approaching her unfazed husband. Devin chuckled and made his way to Christine who sat patiently on her bed with a mouth full of doritos. "Devin!", she said, tackling him with a hug.
"Time for some best friend time!", she said dragging him to her bed. He watched her warily as she threw herself back on her bed and yet again stuffed her face with doritos. He took off his shoes and got on her softer than clouds bed, icecream bowl in hand. "Tell me your strife. We could cry together." He took a spoon of the icecream, still uncertain on whether he should ask her or not. He didn't want to lose yet another friend. He toyed with the thought before finally letting himself speak. "Do..... do you know that it's true..... that I'm gay?....." he watched her expectantly. "Well.... yeah. But I'd learnt pretty recently...", she said awkwardly. He looked away. He knew he shouldn't have asked her. She sounded so uncomfortable when answering him. She saw the sudden change in his facial expression and immediately put her hands up in defense. "B-but that doesn't change the way I view you!", she said hurriedly. He sighed with relief, then chuckled nervously after, upon remembering what he had to say next. "I'm glad it doesn't, because this certainly will...", she raised her eyebrow confusingly. "I..... I was in love with Jason. Well I actually still am.........", he watched her carefully. Her eyes widened, her eyebrows raised so far up that it disappeared under her bangs. Then she laughed. And laughed, and laughed..... "God am I stupid! That was super obvious. Guess I really am boneheaded." She said shaking her head. Devin just watched her, still unsure on what to make of the situation. "I'm sorry.....", he whispered. He didn't want to make her feel like he pretended to like her for Jason's sake, he genuinely enjoyed her company. "Why are you apologizing dude? Love isn't something you choose. It just happens! I just hope you really consider me as a friend...", she said sadly. "Obviously!", he said grabbing her small hands. "You're the best friend I dont deserve. All my other 'friends' are just online strangers. THIS is where the good shit's at." He said smiling kindly. She grasped his hands tightly, a bright smile on her face. "Damn right." They pulled away and chuckled, relief washing through the both of them. "It was always pretty obvious you were gay." She said, taking a scoop of his icecream. He raised his brow. "Meaning?", Christine looked at him with the stupidest grin on her face. "You did seem to like banana flavoured things a bit too much." She burst out laughing at her terrible joke as Devin watched her with an unimpressed smile on his face. "I regret all of those nice things I said about you."
