"Oh, Good afternoon Alexander. Come in, come in before you're completely soaked!" Alexander smiled thankfully at Martha as he took off his muddied shoes, being sure as to not get any on the freshly clean floors. "Good afternoon Miss Dawn, Mr. Dawn." Braxton smiled brightly at him, sending a polite nod his way before returning to his book. "He's tucked up in his room." Martha said before he had even voiced his question. She smiled knowingly at him. "Go up there." She said. "I'll bring the snacks in a sec." Alexander thanked her as he made his way up the polished stairs, wondering to himself if Martha had recently finished cleaning.
"Devin?" He knocked on the already open door twisting his neck to peer inside. "Stop being so polite and just get in here!" Devin jokingly shouted. Alexander chuckled to himself as he made his way inside, immediately lying down on a vacant spot on Devin's bed. "Its really coming down." He whispered, Alexander simply nodded watching Devin stuff a spoon of banana icecream into his mouth. "I don't know how it is you're able to eat something with such a terrible taste." He wrinkled his nose in fake disgust, Devin sticking out his tongue as a reply. "You've known me for what, five months?" He asked, already knowing the answer. "Yet you still can't get over the fact that I have better taste in ice cream than you do." Alexander could practically hear the smile in his voice, shaking his head in disagreement. "Whatever makes you sleep at night." He whispered to himself, receiving a playful hit on the arm in response.
Never had he imagined that he would become friends with such an interesting person. Growing up Alexander was constantly picked on for looking too 'feminine', or being too 'skinny' finding it hard to be viewed as equal by his fellow peers. That's why when he had entered high school he made sure to distance himself from anyone and everyone. Fading into the background to avoid any form of confrontation, but as you could imagine he wasn't exactly lucky. Derrick had some how managed to find it far easier to insult him now that he was deemed 'the quiet kid', and he found history repeating itself once more. That was, until it all completely ceased. The constant torments, after school beatings; all of it came to a sudden halt, and he found himself not knowing what to make of his sudden miracle. On the bright side, he was no longer being tormented and was actually allowed to walk the halls without fears of being humiliated or attacked; but on the downside, some poor soul was now Derrick's personal stress reliever.
But like any normal person, he had quickly decided to take advantage of his little blessing. Enjoying two beautiful undisturbed weeks of bliss, until a certain rumor had began to float around the school. 'Haven't you heard that Devin is gay? He's trying to steal Jason away from Christine, talk about disgusting.' Devin? He had heard that name a few times. He was the principal's daughter's bestfriend, and the close friend of a rather popular student, Jason. Ah.... So he was Derrick's new target. He wanted to reach out to this Devin person. To comfort him because he knew just how deep Derrick could cut.
But he didn't. One part of him was scared that he would only make things worse and the other simply didn't want to end this peaceful bliss, because if he were to save Devin, he would surely be putting himself in danger. He hated both parts just as equally......
He personally knew how dangerous and aggressive Derrick could get when he wanted to, but yet he did nothing but ignore it. Doing what he had been trying to do from the start.... avoid confrontation.
The first time he had saw Devin wasn't exactly a moment he wanted to remember. He was defeated and embarrassed for the entire school to see, beaten and ridiculed. And no students intervened, but then again, he was one of those students. He had wanted to rush in and tell Derrick to back off, to yell at the crowd of students to do something besides standing with their phones out. But he didn't.....
God knows what would've happened if it weren't for Christine. Looking at the way she pushed pass someone as intimidating as Derrick to simply help her friend made him feel a sort of admiration for her.
It made him feel pathetic..... he had left soon after. Hiding in the locker room to have a moment to breathe and process. Devin was sent home for the day, and the school had called an assembly to discuss the situation. He hadn't really listened to what they were saying, only listening to the hissing voices blaming him for doing nothing and simply letting it happen. He hated to agree with them....
Derrick had his pride permanently shattered that day, his fellow peers shunning him almost immediately. It made Alexander's heart twist in an unusual way when ever he thought about the bitter irony that now loomed over Derrick. Now he knew how it felt to be ridiculed..... Alexander wasn't the type to believe in karma.
When he had heard that Devin had came back to school, he had immediately went to check on him but stopped upon realizing just how strange and awkward it would be to have a stranger questioning you after being the victim of something so traumatizing. So he decided against it. A few weeks had gone by rather quickly since Devin came back to school and the guilt of indirectly being involved in what had caused him to stay home in the first place was eating Alexander alive.
That was, until he decided he couldn't handle the boisterous noise in his physics class and so went to the most quiet place he could think of. The library. To say it was a surprise to see Devin there was an understatement. He didn't know what it was that sent him there. Karma? Irony? Fate? All of the above possibly?
When Devin had asked him what he was doing there he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. Derrick. Call it an old habit, but it was still somewhat believable. He was nervous. The blood on his face heating up, his heartbeat pounding rapidly in his chest. He wanted to run away, but that would be even more suspicious, so he decided to do the next best thing which was start a conversation.... by mentioning jason..... maybe he should run.
But in some miraculous way, Devin wasn't too offended by it and instead of making an enemy that day, he made a friend. Good luck? Dumb luck? It was probably the latter, but he had finally done it. He had consoled Devin even if it wasn't really consolation.... but now that he was officially Devin's friend, he could continue to console him and make up for all his lost chances of not doing so.
A chuckle brought his mind back into reality as his hazel eyes looked up at gleeful brown ones. "You've been so quiet." Devin said. "Where was your mind this time?" He asked with a smile. Alexander couldn't help but return that smile, letting the loud 'pitter patter' of the rain fill his ears and calm his mind. "Some where confusing..."
