"So he said that he doesn't want to bring you into his problems?", Christine asked taking a bite out of the comically large pretzel in her hand. Devin nodded. "So he messaged you and not me.... suspicious.....", she rubbed her chin thoughtfully. Devin chuckled. "I wouldn't tell you either Chris, knowing your temper." She huffed, not denying the fact that he was right.
"Jason never really told me anything about his personal life..... he was pretty secluded. Even to his own girlfriend." Christine said quietly. "Yeah," Devin said taking a scoop of his banana flavoured icecream. "It couldn't be anything at home... I went to his house for a sleepover once and it seems him and his dad have a pretty stable relationship.....", He said quietly. "Yeah... the one thing he always bragged about to me, besides you, was his dad." Christine smirked, watching Devin's flustered expression. "But....", she said reaching for another pretzel, "..he's never once talked about his mom.... it's always been a sensitive topic with him." Devin sighed. "He once told me that he cried alot. I thought he was joking around because at that time, he was trying to cheer me up." Christine watched him silently. "I should've known better." Christine gently patted his back. "Dev. Let's not make this into a big problem." He turned around to face her, her face was serious. "What do you mean?", he asked, already knowing the answer. "I know you Devin. I know that you're gonna go digging around for info on Jason's mom, that you're going to try and get him back. But friends-", "Don't finish that sentence." He said. His voice was just above a whisper, but held in it all of his frustration towards what Christine was saying.
"His mother could have been abusive-", "Devin...", Christine said quietly. "What if he was sent to live with her in a place no one could help him." "Devin."
"It is my job as his friend to help him and it is your job as his girlfriend to-", "Devin!"
The room fell silent, Christine trembled, tightly clutching her sheets. "He's not coming back and it isn't our business to get ourselves wrapped up in something he clearly doesn't want us to get involved with." Devin stared silently at her now aware of just how much pain she was in. "Don't you think it hurts?" She asked, a tear slipping down her burning face. "Him leaving me and not even saying good bye? Knowing that he cared so little for me?" She sniffled. "That he seemed to care for you more....", Devin's eyes widened. "But we can't go doing stuff that doesn't concern us. If Jason really wanted you involved he would have said so.... I know it's hard having him leave you so suddenly, but remember that you still got a proper good bye. Friends come, and friends go. That's just how it is."
The guilt and pain of making Christine cry brought on a sickening headache. "Chris-", "I love you Devin.... you've been more like a friend to me than any of those fakes back at highschool....", She stretched out her slender arms and gently pulled him into a hug. "Let go Dev. I know the first crush is always hard to forget, but please don't do anything stupid. Jason loves you, not romantically from what I'm aware of, but he genuinely does care for you, and I'm sure he wouldn't want to hear that his best friend is going around making himself an ass." They chuckled lightly. "I can't say I will Chris but I will try. That I can promise." They held onto each other, sitting in the comfortable silence. Christine once again reminding him why he loved her so much.
"Why the fuck are you two so quiet? The fuck you doin' in there?!" Yang ( Christine's mother ) shouted as she kick down the door, startling both Christine and Devin causing them to immediately move away from each other. Yang blankly watched them. "Can you two be louder please. Right now I'm tryin' my best to block out your dumbass for a father ." She said massaging her temples.
