Every word, every scratch, every calculation on those papers, was for Devin. All the tireless studying and cramming of every single bit of information, was for Devin. Jason had blazed through the exams with new found determination. Now they were done, he had worked to the best of his abilities and there was nothing left to do but wait.
In two weeks, the results of every student participating in the final exams would be released. Including his results. He waited anxiously. He couldn't help himself. Each day felt longer than the previous one, and in time he felt the familiar doubt creeping back into his mind. His mom and dad comforted him, even Christine did, reminding him to just relax and breathe. It was funny how many times he had forgotten to do that.
Eventually, the last day had reached and Jason and his mother immediately rushed to the website where the results were to be released. The clenching pain in his chest was unbearable, his heart beating faster than it ever did. But wouldn't you believe it. He had passed, and with flying colours at that. His mother practically threw herself on him, tears of joy streaming down her face as she made haste to cover his cheeks in coloured kisses.
It felt unreal, but he shook himself out of his stunned mind, going back on the website to check for Christine and Devin's results. They had passed as well, that was a given after all.
Christine called him shortly after, the joyous pitch in her voice proving to be infectious. She congratulated him, telling him how proud she was of him, saying she couldn't wait to see him, couldn't wait for Devin to see him.
He couldn't wait either, receiving the date for the prom and mentally preparing himself for Devin's reaction. And eventually, just as how the day of the release of his results had came, so had the day for prom.He currently stood in his bedroom, Lydia fixing the unruly strands of his hair. "I'm so proud of you Jason." She said, a bright smile plastered on her makeup covered face. "I can't wait to see Daniel's surprised expression when he sees you!" Jason laughed. "You being excited to see dad? Now that's a first." Lydia huffed, swatting his hand playfully. "Hush you! I also can't wait to meet Devin, he sounds like such a lovely kid." Jason groaned, trying to hide his flushed face from his mother.
After Lydia was satisfied with the placement of his hair, they went to catch their four hour flight back home. It was peaceful on the half empty plane, the soft music in his ears almost lulling him to sleep. Lydia held his hand the entire way there, giving it a tight squeeze whenever the plane experienced a bit of turbulence.
When the plane finally touched down, the sudden realization of what it was he was going to do had dawned on him; and maybe it was his mother's warm hand, or the reassuring talks with Christine, but he found himself feeling ready to face whatever it was that lay ahead.
Meanwhile with Devin....
"We're gonna look like such bad bitches when we walk into school." Christine said, admiring her long pink dress in Devin's bedroom mirror. Devin laughed. "Speak for yourself. You look like the poster child for Disney princesses." She smiled, making her way over to his bed, sitting on a vacant spot. "Shuddup. Did you see Alex's suit? He's gonna look so crisp when he shows up." Devin nodded, laying his head on her exposed shoulder.
"I feel like tonight's gonna be a good night. I'm not being bullied anymore, I made a new friend, I passed my finals. Everything's leading up to a perfect night...."
Christine gently patted his back. "You have no idea." Devin rose from her shoulder, looking at her quizzically. "What do you-"
"Kids, Alexander's here!" Christine jumped up, her pearl white heels clicking and clacking as she excitedly ran downstairs, not giving Devin anytime to ask his question. He sighed quietly to himself, smoothing out his red suit before making his way downstairs. Alexander turned towards him, giving him a once over, a small smile creeping onto his freckled face. "You guys look amazing!" He said, giving Devin a hug. "You too. Me and Christine were just talking about your suit. Exquisite fashion sense my good sir." Alexander blushed nervously, looking down at his brown and gold suit. "T-thanks. You guys are honestly too sweet."
Braxton rushed over to them, a camera in his bulky hands. "Alright kids, squeeze together. Its picture time." Christine being the shortest, stood in the middle, throwing her arms around the two boys. Martha came shortly after, her phone in her tiny hands. "Everyone say PROM."
"PROM!!!"
