Devin sat alone in the empty library. A doctor pepper in his hand, loud music blasting through his earplugs. Recently, coming to the library had began to feel somewhat bittersweet to him. It was his sanctuary, but it was also a reminder that Jason was no longer with him. It was the place they met, the place Devin had first broken out of his self made shell. Christine didn't like coming to the library, she always complained about how scary and old it was which often made Devin laugh.
And like almost every other day, Devin was skipping physics and temporarily escaping reality. "H-hello." Devin spun around, nearly falling off of his chair, before quickly regaining his posture. Before him stood a timid looking boy with short, ruffled black hair and big dewy, hazel eyes. "Is it ok if I stay with you?" He had the softest voice Devin had ever heard, almost angelic sounding. Devin nodded slowly, studying the way he moved. He wore a dark blue jumper and a long sleeved, white undershirt, and from what Devin could see he looked a bit scrawny. 'One of those soft boys.' He thought. He could only imagine how he looked. Long unkempt brown hair, a large grey hoodie and black distress jeans. He must've looked like a cliche bad boy. He chuckled at the thought. He watched the strange teen, waiting for him to say something, anything to get rid of the awkward silence. And after what felt like hours of painful silence, Devin decided to get the nonexistent conversation going. "Sooooo......", he said awkwardly, but loud enough to catch the boy's attention. "What brings you here?" The boy gazed at him for a moment as if he were contemplating whether or not to answer.
"I'm hiding...", he eventually said. "In just a few minutes, Derrick is gonna come looking for me....", Devin sighed sadly. Why did Derrick have to be such an asshole to everyone? "That's fine..... you could stay here as long as you need to, and if he tries 'looking' for you again... just come here." The boy smiled thankfully, reminding Devin of a somewhat helpless kitten. After that the two sat in a comfortable silence, merely enjoying the feeling of solitude provided by the library. "Oh wait!" The boy said suddenly, catching Devin's attention once more. "I know you! You're Devin. Jason's boyfriend!" Devin felt his heart drop, quickly averting his eyes from the boy's captivated stare. "I am NOT Jason's boyfriend. He was my best friend....... that's all." He said quietly. He didn't wait for an apology but instead turned up the volume of his music, looking out of the nonexistent window. Is that what Derrick was telling people? He sighed. It was to be expected. After all, the people in his school weren't exactly the most perceptive.
A light tap on his shoulder made him begrudgingly turn his head. He didn't want to hear what this boy had to say, especially if it was some rant about how he 'scared' Jason away. However, the boy's regretful face was what he was met with. Sad, glossy eyes stared at him as he reached for the earphones blocking out any and everything he had to say. "I.....", he said once pulling out the earphones, his voice quiet. "I didn't mean to offend you its just.... that's what I heard.... I'm sorry, I shouldn't have assumed." Devin watched him, speechless. Simply waving his hand as if to brush off the apologies of the seemingly shy boy. "Jason.... me and Jason were bestfriends." He chuckled. "I know I sound like one of those annoying ass cheerleaders but it's true..... he was the first person who accepted me for the way I am."
"The way you are?" The boy asked, a confused look on his face. Devin smiled. "Yeah. I... I tend to be either too weird or too rude for people's taste. But he didn't care. In fact he said that he appreciated me for it, that he wouldn't have been my friend otherwise." The boy laughed quietly, Devin joining in as well. "I think he was right." The boy said sweetly. "Those things make you, you. That's why you shouldn't be ashamed of it." Devin chuckled lightly. "And what about you? What makes You special?" The boy's smile immediately faltered upon hearing the question, obviously taking it the wrong way. Devin, after seeing how uncomfortable he made him, rushed out of his chair in an attempt to comfort him. "No- fuck that's not what I meant. Jesus I didn't mean for it to come out like that." He said quickly. "I genuinely wanted to know what it is. That was just an attempt to know more about you.....", he said awkwardly. The boy's hazel eyes widened as he stared up into Devin's dark brown ones. "You..... want to know about me?" He asked quietly. "Ofcourse." Devin replied. The boy smiled happily, his eyes lighting up. His face turning from that of discomfort to that of happiness in an instant. "My name's Alexander!" He blurted out, making Devin giggle at his suddenness. "Um- sorry......", he said, clearly embarrassed. "Would.... would you perhaps want to be my friend?" He asked hopefully, making the biggest puppy dog eyes. Devin patted his soft hair, a smile on his face. "Yes." Alexander reminded Devin of a lost child, it didn't help with his timidity and large childlike eyes.
Alexander smiled, already brightening Devin's once dreary day. "I've never had a friend.....", he whispered, causing Devin to smile. He seems to be doing alot of that since meeting Alexander. "Well, there's a first time for everything."

Meanwhile Jason sat frustratingly as his tutor droned on and on about things he already knew. Lydia had refused to send him to any near by school and instead hired a tutor to teach him everything he was missing out. She had simply stated that she had no intention of letting him interact with mongrels and ruffians. Saying that she refused to let her own flesh and blood stoop that low.
And just like that, the opportunity to make new friends was immediately snatched away. Instead he was forced to stay at home under his mother's daily surveillance. Jason had come to learn  that his mother was the founder of a very popular restaurant in California. Explaining how it was that she was able to afford such a fancy house with equally fancy items. It also explained why his father had put him in her care without worries.
The conclusion of Jason's lessons came quickly, leaving him to aimlessly wonder the house. His mother was currently on a phone call that seemed to have no end, forcing him to prepare dinner for the night. He had been keeping in contact with his father, speaking to him ever so often. Asking him about his health and his wellbeing...... about Devin. From what Jason knew, his father and Braxton were basically attached at the hip, which made it all the more ironic when he befriended Devin. He wasn't able to talk to Devin. He simply couldn't. But that didn't mean that he was going to completely forget him.
He sighed to himself, slumping into a comfy chair with dinner in hand. He had left so suddenly, leaving Devin to defend for himself in such a messy situation. When Devin had finally began to let his walls down. Thinking about it made his head hurt. The thought of Devin crying continued to flood his already stressed mind. The thought of the bullies finally catching up to him.... he  bit into his tuna sandwich, taking a large bite. Christine had always teased him when he stress ate, constantly comparing  him to a woman going through her midlife crisis. Well in this case....... she was kind of right.
Christine. He wasn't the bit worried about her. She could more than handle herself and even if she couldn't, no one would dear mess with the principal's daughter. He wished he could've ended their relationship in a much better way, however, messaging her now would only lead her to questioning him and finding out the reason why he left. He could not allow that to happen because, one: she would tell Devin. And two: he could not afford to drag them into his drama infested life. The loud 'clacking' of heels sounded through the empty house causing Jason to tiredly raise his head.
"Sorry I'm late sweetie." Lydia said, climbing down the stairs. She looked at his half eaten sandwich and smiled. "Don't worry." She said, tying her long hair into a messy bun. "I'll make you some proper Dinner."
