Lydia sat at the chair opposite of Jason, watching him expectantly. He sighed, internally scolding himself for how careless he was to say something like that and not hear her come in. "So, it's clear you don't want to talk about it-", Jason snickered. "Really? I couldn't have guessed." Lydia rolled her eyes, pinching the bridge of her nose in an attempt to focus on what she had to say. "As I was saying; I know you don't want to talk about it, but it's totally fine. I'm just a bit shocked that you wanted to... you know what, with your male friend." Jason's shoulders relaxed at the fact she wasn't screaming insults at him, or brutally scolding him. Knowing she was simply confused and not angry. He shrugged. "Is it that surprising?" He said, avoiding the searching gaze of her warm brown eyes. She chuckled, shaking her head. "Not really. You always did go on and on about Devin. I was just shocked to hear you admit it to yourself." "MOM." He buried his burning face in his hands, trying to ignore her joyful laughter.
"Don't be embarrassed Jason, it's ok that you like Devin, and its even better that you've seemingly came to terms with it. No matter its form, young love could often be quite complicated." Her lips curved into a sad smile, and it was only then had he met her eyes. Clear, proud, accepting. He felt his heart swell in his chest, and then he thought. This is how Devin must've felt when he came out to his parents. An overwhelming amount of relief and joy.
Lydia gently grasped his hand. Smiling fondly of him. "Did.... did you tell your father?" Her voice was soft, as if she were trying not to alarm him. He shook his head. No. Lydia wouldn't admit it but she felt a bit of pride knowing that she was the first one Jason told, even despite the given situation. "I was actually thinking of telling him when I'm done with exams...... and go back home for the after graduation prom." Lydia was silent for a moment, and Jason found himself running over an internal monologue he might have to resort to if she said no. He was willing to argue with her if it meant getting a chance to go back home. He had to see his dad.... had to confront Devin.
Lydia's grip on his hand tightened, but not enough to hurt him. She heaved a great sigh, gently massaging his knuckles, and then began to speak. She opened her mouth, speaking, but Jason was certain he hadn't heard her correctly. "What?" He said, at utter disbelief. She smiled. "You heard me. I said you can go. I can't keep you here forever, you're practically already done with school." Jason stared at her for a moment, at an utter loss of words; but then quickly got up from his chair to engulf her in a large hug. "Oof, Jason you're going to tilt over my chair." She laughed. Jason couldn't help but laugh with her, repeatedly giving his thanks. "Nope don't thank me yet. You could only go if you've done well in your exams. It is your finals after all." Jason smiled brightly, nodding her way, knowing he was definitely going to pass with what was on the line. She ruffled his hair, knowing that even if he didn't pass, there was no stopping him from going home.
