Chapter Nine || A way out

Charlotte was still recovering in the clinic and currently laid in bed waiting for Ed's return. He had gone to drink coffee to be able to stay awake. He had stayed by Charlotte's side every single day and had barely gotten any sleep. The blonde had told him to go back to their place and rest, but he refused to leave her side for more than five minutes. Not long after Ed stepped out, Lee came in with Barbara following her.

"Speaking of which, I've got patients," Lee told Barbara and started checking on Charlotte, who tried to pull her hands away. "Stop that, Charlotte".

"I'm fine," Charlotte told her but allowed Lee to use the stethoscope on her. She shivered and glared at Lee. "That's cold".

Barbara chuckled humorously. "Funny coming from the same person who dated Mr. Freeze".

"Just go, Barbara," Lee said before the two blondes could start a war right there on the clinic.

"Oh, you wouldn't kick Jim's baby mama to the curb, now, would you?" Barbara asked.

Charlotte knitted her eyebrows. "What? You're pregnant?"

"I am," Barbara said with a different glow in her blue eyes. But then she eyed Charlotte's belly wearily. "Why? Are you?"

"No!" Charlotte exclaimed right away but looked at Lee for confirmation. "I'm not right?"

Lee looked in between the two blondes in indignation before stopping on Charlotte. "No, you're not pregnant".

"Thank God," Barbara muttered, but Charlotte heard her and glared hatefully at Barbara.

Lee decided to intervene again. "Whatever happened between you and Jim, it's none of my concern. So if you're here to gloat-"

"Jim is the father". Charlotte laughed as she eyed the two ex-fiancées of Jim Gordon. "That's awkward". Unfortunately, Charlotte didn't have any popcorn at the moment.

Barbara decided to pretend Charlotte wasn't even there and turned to Lee. "I'm here for medical assistance," she rubbed her belly softly, "for my little nugget. What do you say? Be my O.B.?"

"You can't be serious," Lee said as she put the stethoscope around her neck.

"She looks serious to me," Charlotte interjected, but was ignored.

"I know we've had our differences," Barbara started and Lee scoffed.

"You tried to kill me, Barbara. Twice," Lee reminded as she started checking Charlotte's jaw to see if it had healed correctly. When Charlotte winced, Lee let go of her. "You recovered faster than anyone I've ever seen with a broken jaw".

Barbara snorted and rolled her eyes. Charlotte noticed it and looked at her. "Problem?"

"Do you want me to make a list?" Barbara quickly retorted and turned to the brunette doctor. "Look, Lee, that was years ago".

Lee sighed and scribbled away on Charlotte's chart. "There are other doctors here".

"Not as good as you," Barbara replied honestly and when Lee started to walk up to the window, she went after her. "Look, whatever you think of me, my child is innocent, and I want the best for it. And in this place, that means you".

Lee found herself sighing once again, but turned to face Barbara. The brunette didn't want Barbara to lose her baby as she had. "Does Jim know you're here?"

"This is none of his business," Barbara told Lee.

Then as if on cue, Jim walked in looking for Lee. He had seen Ed and was told that Lee would probably be with Charlotte. However, Ed said nothing about Barbara being there too.
