It's cold here. Rainy and dark. But why wouldn't it be. That's the nature of the Pacific Northwest.
That's the reason I chose a college here. No one would expect it. The furthest bareable place from what used to be "home". As far away as possible from the shitshow I once called my life. A completely new surrounding.
I'm about 20 minutes away from the station I'm supposed to get off at. 20 minutes away from my brand new start.
No one knows me here. No one knows about my past or about Dolsen High. No one knows about them or him- the memories ungracefully throw me back into reality. Back into why I'm here in the first place.
Invent a new me. Best decision I've ever made. Escape the horrors of that town and start again somewhere far, far away.
Hell, I would have moved to a different country if immigration wasn't such a bitch. I had the grades to be accepted to a university abroad, but after the incident and my lack of going to school, my gpa suffered greatly.
So my dreams of fish and chips on the boardwalk somewhere in England, were crushed.
Being pulled out of my thoughts by the automated voice stating my station was the next stop. I began to pack up my bags. Folding up the blanket I had pulled somewhere between Eugene and Portland, when it started to get cold.
I stuff other miscellaneous items into my backpack, throw a windbreaker over my hoodie and pull my bag onto my shoulders.
Once the buss pulls into the station, I call an Uber for my ride to the University.
As the Uber pulls into the long drive leading up to the campus, I can see some of the buildings beyond the trees. Modern buildings with some historic elements. A mixture of past and present.
That thought makes me nervous. What if I made a mistake coming here? What if I had just tried harder to go overseas? What if they find me?
I can feel my anxiety becoming to high, willing myself to calm down before a full blown attack recks through me.
The Uber drops me off at the front gate. Wooddrey University. A fairly new school in Washington State. With a large campus, great marine biology program and most excitedly a music room open to all student body.
Pulling my bags out of the trunk and slinging my guitar over my shoulder. I wave goodbye to the driver, put in my headphones and pull up my hood.
Readjusting my bags, I make my way into the campus heading for the main faculty office.
Upon walking into the building, a nice receptionist lady named Jill greets me and directs me to the student advisors office, for all my onboarding information.
The student advisor is a short man, with salt and pepper hair named Mr. Quinn. He greets me with a smile and a handshake.
"Welcome to Wooddrey Ms. Shey, we are glad to have you. This is your student handbook-" handing over a thick packet of paper
"-inside the handbook you can find a link to a web address that let's you access your class schedule and your dormitory assignments. There is also an app for you to download that let's you view upcoming school events, cafeteria balances, book rentals, etc. Your student ID will be available for pick up tomorrow. Well that is everything I have for you. Do you have any questions?" He asks politely.
"No, no I'm alright. Thank you." I return with a smile.Be polite and be quick. Limit your interaction with people to keep yourself safe. These are the words that plays on loop in my head. A defense mechanism I've put in place to distance myself.
"Alright then Ms. Shey, I hope you come to like it here. If you ever need anything I am always available. Please check in with your dormitory advisor this afternoon once you've settled in." He says to me as he leads me out of his office.
With one final handshake, I say goodbye and leave the faculty building.
Sitting down on a bench outside, I open up my packet and log into the website, with the credentials they provided to me.
The class schedule says classes don't begin until the beginning of next month. English 101 and Bio in the mornings/Math and Geography in the evenings, three days a week. Rest of the days are available for study hall or extracurriculars.
My first thought immediately goes to the music room. I've always been good at singing and playing piano, but recently I've been trying my hand at the guitar.
I'm not great but I'm hoping that access to the music room will really help to improve my abilities. That way I won't risk annoying my roommate.
Speaking of roommate, it says I'm in room 317 in Anderson Hall with someone named Taylor. Well I hope she's nice enough, though I don't plan on making friends.
Putting away my phone. I pick up my bags and begin making my way to Anderson Hall.
It's a bit of a walk away from the Faculty Building so by the time I arrive I'm pretty winded. Physical activity has never been a strong suit of mine. I die walking up a flight of stairs.
Opening the door to the building I'll be calling my home for the foreseeable future, I am graced with a rude awakening. If the abundance of guys and girls in the common room wasn't enough of a sign, the different gender bathrooms certainly were.
These are co-ed dorms.
