Are teachers replaced by computers?
As the use of electronic devices constantly increases, there will soon be no role for teachers in the classroom.
Since the introduction of computers in the learning process, the search for information has become more simple and expeditious, due to the fact that connectivity has vastly expedited data availability in all of the world wide web. However, in my opinion, even though the advancements in technology are able to affect the teacher's role, it remains unlikely for them to completely replace teachers and cause a complete absence of them in the classroom.
Nobody can deny that the acquisition of knowledge is more effective and straightforward with computers. The mere touching and exploring of the device accompanied by the perpetual advancements and updates of the internet contribute to a better grasping of up-to-date information and an overall better experience of interaction.
Nevertheless, no matter how intelligent and sophisticated the computer is, there is still the necessity for a teacher to be present in a classroom as the expertise of the subject, the interpreter to translate complex concepts to each individual's specific needs, and the mentor with years, even decades of unparalleled experience in dealing with human beings. The said process can hardly be mimicked by computers, at least not in the foreseeable future.
However, this doesn't mean that teachers are completely irreplaceable. As computers' appearances are becoming increasingly frequent in the educational field, teachers should be aware of their roles as mentors, rather than transmitters or bystanders in the students' path of learning. They should serve as guides, counselors, and instructors all in one in the learning process, while constantly providing aid to pupils for their discovery of knowledge.
In conclusion, teachers play and will continue to play an important role in the classroom, and there is little possibility that they will be completely replaced and disappear in the field of education. However, there will be an impact on their career, owing to the increasing progress of computers nowadays. Thus, teachers must be cognizant of the fact in time and recognize their strengths against computers.
*Despite I knew what a decent teacher should be, almost all the ones I've met are ____.
* 2021/6 edit: And that says a lot, considering this still stands even in junior high.
