Memories and their roles

How would you define "memory"? What comes to mind? The preservation of knowledge? An immeasurably vast and complex storage of snippets and scenes from an owner's past? A competitor to the infamous man-made electronic devices, the computer and internet? What is the role of memory?

Every time we recall events in our minds, we presume them as recordings and flashbacks of the past. However, our memories are also prone to be atrocious methods in storing information - we've all thought of losing lost accessories on the coffee table before. Imaginations and assumptions corrupt and alter memories, and in most cases, the accuracy of them are inept for verification.

Nevertheless, its importance regarding self-identity is indisputable. One of the most overused cliches in the field of literature is memory loss - the business mercenary and the neighborhood femme fatale somehow both end up in the same hospital ward, one out of the pair with his or her memory wiped out by a car accident. To quote the given passage, one of the most distressing consequences of memory loss is probably a loss of self. Moreover, it can even be stated that one's true identity is, in its entirety, an essence from a wide collection of memories.

Then during the revolutionary era of the 21st century, technology was introduced to every aspect of our lives. The mere commands from the touch of a button on-screen enables extreme convenience, speed, and precision no human being can ever be able to achieve, including storing memories. However, heated debates soon followed suit. The phenomenon that we all rely on is bound to affect our internal memory system in the long run, they said, even causing development to malfunction in the future.

In my opinion, although overdependence on technology is said to be detrimental, there is still a grey area between the extremes, and all we need to do is to make use of it. Provided that we use technology as an advanced aid rather than an instant solution for memory-related dilemmas, the creators and creation can both co-exist in harmony.

* I'm actually preparing CPE for the second time because the last certificate I have was from two years ago. And if I want to study abroad, I'll have to take Cambridge, IELTS, and probably TOEFL all over again, and SAT as well, which I never took before because it's both English and math.

And the worst part? I'm currently stacking all these on top of ninth grade, not elementary school. And my mom is so confident that I'd pass, she didn't tell me before and now I have to rush everything in exactly one month-

2021 update: Hey, I passed!

5/18 update: and I'm done with ninth grade, finally.
