If Greenery had woken up three hours later she probably would have woken up with a huge grin on her face but that was not the case as she fought away sleep trying to find an excuse that could lead to her going back to sleep. The alarm clock was not taking any of it, it rang out loudly dragging her from her dreamless sleep. She had had nightmares all throughout the morning and it seemed she had just been getting peaceful sleep when the alarm went off.
She groaned, turned, it being no help at all as sleep clouded her, clawing at her as if mocking her that she had little to no control over it. The blankets were so warm engulfing her in their warm embrace, the rain could be heard from inside, the cold daring her to just put a hand out. She snuggled deeper, wrapping the duvet around her being, basking in its heavenly warmth. Just a little while longer she told herself succumbing back to the dream only to shoot up quickly fumbling for her phone.
05:30, she gasped realisation she had been fighting with sleep for thirty minutes. It was as if a bucket of cold water was poured onto her. She quickly got off the bed, falling on the ground with a thud sipping out the remains of sleep. In a matter of two minutes the bed was done with none stop swearing filling the room. She stumbled now and again making her way around the room picking this and that. Finally she ran into the shower soaping herself quickly, washing it down and drying.
It was six o'clock when she made her way down in the dark house. It was as quiet as always with her father probably asleep. As of now she was trying to get down the stairs while pulling on her sweater which she was failing miserably. It was then decided that she could not do both things so she stood where she was, pulling on her sweater over her head trying not to mess with her barely combed hair with no luck. When the sweater was on and bag pulled on her back she proceeded down the stairs to the door which she unlocked then sped out. It was dark, misty and drizzling, the perfect weather for sleep and cuddling.
Greenery could not help as fear crept at her. She was alone and anything could happen in the dark. She tried convincing herself that even if someone was after her they would not know that she would take the early shift today thus not planning to attack her on this morning. It did not do much convincing but helped her calm down a little. Her hoodie was pulled up and she walked as fast as she could on the damp dirt road. Nothing was heard besides the crunch of her feet on the ground and the whistle of the wind along with some croaking.
Today she had the early shift where she was expected at half past six where she would prep for the day. The head chef had the day off, getting in at six in the evening. Greenery could not help but be nervous at being all alone for the day. Would she manage? It was pretty obvious that they were understaffed especially in the kitchen and that is probably why they had hired her for a job she was so under qualified, as much of a good cook she still had no experience whatsoever and the fact that she landed the job was just a blessing.
She got to the diner just a little past half-six, a few waiters had already arrived but other than that it was empty. The waiters cleaned the floors and sorted out the cutlery.
"Morning," She said passing and walking to the changing rooms.
"Morning, " the two waiters said back.
After changing into her white chef jacket along with her net and shoes she went to the kitchen which had already been mopped thankfully. Firstly she took out the needed ingredients for the muffins and cake as it was cold and people would be wanting muffins for breakfast. She whipped it together, getting hotter by the minute as she worked the dough until it was just right. Getting out the pans she put the muffin papers on the pan before pouring the dough over. The oven was already hot as being pre-heated. She slid the two pans one above the other before closing shut and pouring more dough into more pans. She moved on from that and marinated all the meats she would use for the day leaving it to chill while soaking in all the spices. She went and pulled out the ground beef, placing a whole lot into a huge dish, she added some finely chopped onions, salt, pepper, chilli, sugar, barbecue spice, beef spice, mixed herbs and more spices after which she added bread crumbs, four eggs and flour mixing it all together and leaving it for when someone ordered a burger.
Greenery did not have time to stop and wonder if she was spicing everything right, she moved on hoping she would not serve too salty food. Taking a deep breath, already feeling the small beads of sweat forming on her forehead. It was so hot one would be amazed at the cold weather outside. Looking up at the clock she saw the clock hitting ten minutes to eight. The rest of the staff had arrived by seven and the diner was already buzzing with people. The orders started coming in, one at a time. Muffins and coffee followed by breakfast meaty special. She hit the grill, tossing the bacon along with some sausages while on the other hand the bread on the stove along with eggs.
It was ten o'clock when she started preparing for lunch, the breakfast buzz was over with a few orders now and then. As much as she was managing the muffins were really setting her back. They were going so fast while she did not have the time to mix the dough while preparing for lunch. She slid in the last two trays in the oven hoping it would be enough till after lunch.
"Greenery, they have just bought the last piece of the cake and want more." A waiter popped up.
"Please tell them to buy the muffins, I can't make a cake now. I am falling behind." She replied rushing around the kitchen trying to make a medium hot chicken pita with fries.
Her feet were throbbing and she had not had anything to eat so her stomach was violently growling at her. She made herself a double cheese burger along with coated fries. With all the madness happening she leaned by the counter eating before she fell down. She was no good hungry. The receipts came in as she tried to eat as quickly as she could without choking. She could have two meals of whatever she wanted, compliments of being a chef.
Finishing up, feeling full and less effective as she was too full. She washed the dishes then went back making each dish with the waiters coming to her in frustration of the food being so late. By five o'clock she was dead beat and could not wait for the head chef to walk in which seemed like forever. Time trickled slowly while receipts sprung out quickly, the diner catching the busy vibe of the evening.
Greenery became more and more frustrated as time passed, the clock hitting half past five with no head chef in sight. She felt like bursting in anger as she seemed to be getting more and more tired by the second.
"Greenery move those chicken feet, people are waiting out here." Mr Roy popped up the kitchen shouting. Almost bringing tears to the so tired Greenery.
"Yes sir!" She tried ignoring that the head chef was late by an hour and that she was working overtime. She poured the frozen fries in the deep fryer getting a roar from the sizzling oil then went on making the pasta along with the large cheesy cheese pizza. She plated the slow cooked barbecue ribs with chips, the rib burger and the plate with the grilled T-bone steak. It went on with the receipts tripling in and her moving crazily around the kitchen. Nothing was going right as everything was overwhelming with too many receipts coming in and too little plates going out. It was out of her ability to move that fast even with some of the waiters helping now and again especially with the dishes. At eight o'clock it was then that Mr Rob informed her that the head chef was bed ridden with a nasty fever. She could not believe her ears as tears pooled in her eyes which she blinked back. She was dead tired and she was still new here with no knowledge of some things.
Taking a deep breath she tried to form a working plan.
"Can I please have two girls to help me I can't work this kitchen on my own?" She asked.
"Okay," He said then walked out two minutes later walked in two girls; Bree and Sara who were also in high school.
"Okay, please scoop the ground beef there using this spoon and make burgers putting them on the grill, Sara please take over the grilling chicken and chips.
They nodded doing what they were told asking here and there. The night went on with no promise of it ending. Three hours later they were packing away dishes everyone looking dead especially her as she had worked through two shifts with no break. She did not know how she did it, how she survived it but there she was walking out the diner trying to call her dad who would not pick up meaning he was still at work.
Fog was crawling down the floor making it impossible to see someone a few miles away. Rain now pouring down harsh winds swaying the trees. Greenery stood under the veranda with her trembling pale hands the cold sipping up her spine. She thought of walking out, her pride would not let her call the only number on her phone besides her dad. She took a step forward, the rain pouring down on her with no mercy causing her to run back to shelter. There was no way she was walking in that weather and to make it worse her legs and feet were so sore they violently shook as she stood, threatening to give out.
"I can't!" She said holding her phone with her shaking hands.
"I can't," She shook her head at something that she definitely had to do. She could not stand here forever, a young girl alone in the misty night with no one in sight, that was just a playground for rapists and killers. At the mention of rapist she quickly fumbled with her phone, her eyes not seeing clouded with tears. Her whole body shook. The phone rang over and over freaking her out by each ring as her eyes scanned the lot.
"Hello," Came the husky, sleepy voice which she would have found so sexy if she was not in a panic mode.
"Hi," her voice seemed to be trapped in her throat as it came out low and husky.
She tried again. "Hi, this is Greenery, did I wake you?" She wanted nothing more than to get straight to the point shouting for him to please get up and hurry but she held on to her wits.
"Oohh, Hi," He said back and there was some shuffling.
"Yeah, but I am awake now, what's up?" He asked.
"I am so sorry, I just, I don't know. I need a ride please." She said so desperately hating every second of it.
"You are at work? I thought you had an early shift."
"The head chef called in sick so I worked two shifts. Please, there is no one else. I am so sorry." She begged wishing she would die.
"Urgh, Greenery you should not be alone there at this weather. Fuck! Umh." There was a pause,
"I am not around Green, I flew out of the country to meet some friends. Shit!"
All hope was lost and the tears just went pouring down as the winds got harsher and harsher blowing and brushing her already sore cheeks.
"Oohh ... Sorry for bothering you." She said.
"You can never bother me Green, stay there. I am going to call a friend of mine then I will get back to you hey. Just go find a place where you can stand away from the road. I will call back, I promise." He said as Greenery nodded forgetting that he could not see her. The line died and she quickly walked away from the front to the side which was a bit hidden. The rain poured down heavily, not having mercy and her sneakers were soaking wet along with half of her leggings.
Time seemed to tick away as she stared at her phone expecting the phone call with different scenarios playing in her head leaving her shaking to no end and grabbing the phone a little tighter.
What if he goes back to sleep?
What if he can't find his friend?
What if someone sees her here in the dark and.....
The phone buzzed stopping her right there and then.
"Hello," She said hope filling her.
"Someone is coming, they will be there in thirty minutes hey." As relieved as she was she could not help the dread as she thought how long thirty minutes was. A lot could happen in thirty minutes and she could not help the possibility that she could be killed and raped in a matter of thirty minutes.
Lord she was scared and she could not help the tears as her heart felt like it would burst.
"Thank you so much, thank you so so much." She said dreading the moment he would cut the line and leave her truly alone.
"Okay, I will stay on the line with you to make sure you okay and safe as you wait." He said so sweetly making her heart drum for a different kind of reason.
"No please, I am sure you are tired and sleepy. You have already helped me so much and I can't hold you." She said hating her words but knowing she could not just let him stay up for her, she was sure he would rather be sleeping.
"Bull, I can't leave you alone. Now tell me about your day. How many dishes did you burn?" He said.
Greenery took a breath trying to calm herself down as she slid down the wall sitting on the tiny dry space as the rain poured down just in front of her. She thought back to the question he asked and as scared as she was she answered.
"I burned three." She said.
"How mad was your boss?" He asked laughing.
"He was so mad and threatened to cut my paycheque in half." She said calming down with his sexy voice bringing hope that things would be alright.
"How was your day?" She asked.
"It was nice I guess." He said.
"Just nice?" She asked.
"It was great, I met a few friends, we hit the clubs and chilled." He said making her green with envy at those friends who got the opportunity to dance and chill with him.
"That is nice, " She said back. Silence followed with awkward silence threatening to kill them both. No one knew what to say next but both wanted to say something.
"Why are you so nice to me after all I have done to you?" She suddenly asked, immediately slapping her hand on her mouth and cursing internally.
There was a long agonising pause as she thought he would probably get angry and drop the call.
"It's just that I think you did not deserve what happened to you after. It's just that I was young and cocky, went all wrong about everything then people started calling you names and .... I don't know." he replied leaving her grabbing on tightly to the phone.
"I blame myself you know, I did not react well. I put you there and I will never forgive myself." He said.
"No you did not, I was crazy and ..."
"You were not crazy Green, you were just going through some things," He said.
There was a long pause as Greenery drew a long breath. Her heart clenched wishing she could take it all back.
"Can I ask you a question?" He asked making her more nervous than she already was.
There was a long pause her not knowing if this was a good idea or not.
"Okay," She said unsure.
"How was it in there?" He asked causing her heart to drum so hard she wondered if he could hear it.
She did not want to answer, hell she did not want to even talk about it. Minutes passed as she opened her mouth only to close it back shut. Her tongue got caught by a cat, no words coming out.
"It's Okay, you don't have to talk about it." Greenery released a breath she did not know she held, relief falling over her body. Her time in the institute was something she wished to forget but knew that it would forever haunt her to her death bed.
There was a long awkward silence, they thought of topics to talk about only to swallow their words when about to talk. It went on for long minutes, time ticking by slowly.
"Have you seen the ' After' movie?" He asked, cursing himself internally at what a pathetic thing to ask, he did not know why but somehow she just left him confused and as nervous as hell.
"Uumm, what?" She asked perplexed.
"The movie called 'After'?"
"No, I have not seen it." She said back. Movies had been something that had not crossed her mind since she came back while before she was literally obsessed with TV, she would stay in all day watching TV and never failing to find something interesting to watch.
"Me neither, I have just been waiting on the right time to watch it." He said.
"If you don't mind would you be willing to watch it with me next weekend?"
"I....." Greenery did not know what to say. This was not right, she knew that. She was supposed to be staying away from this guy but here she was talking to him. It was not right but it felt good, butterflies filled the pit of her stomach with her heart drumming so crazily. It was not fair, she had been in love with this guy for four years now, so in love it was dangerous. She could not take this, she was only going to get hurt in the end again!
"I am sorry but I can't." She declined politely.
"Please?" He said so sweetly she almost cried out loud from such sweet torture.
"I can't, I should not even talk to you Bash, and if your parents could find out I don't even want to imagine what would happen to me. I can't, I can't go back there." Her words were filled with so much grief and pain.
"I would never let that happen Green, I would never allow you to go back there. I swear to you."
There was a silence as Greenery took in his words. She would not fall for that, there was no way she would fall for that. In that instance she made a decision so painful she was shaking.
"I don't think we should talk anymore. I know I called you but I promise it won't happen again." She said, her heart breaking just a little.
"You forget that I have your phone number." He said back.
"Well I don't want you calling me."
"Greenery listen to me and listen carefully. I will be there every morning to pick you up for school. I will be there to drive you home from work whether you like it or not and I will personally deal with anyone who puts a finger on you, I hope you understand Greenery Smith."
"Yes, I do."
