****37.2 - Nala****

Nala had arrived with a glass of water to find Aija gone. She had been terrified. Where had that girl gone? Would she try to escape, there, among several Ytai? Or had she been taken by one of the Ytai here? Would that Ytai Harvest Aija?

Nala had cursed and looked around and found Thieron coming towards her. She grew more frightened. Thieron would be furious when he learnt that Nala had left Aija by herself, even for a minute and that now she wasn't to be seen.

"Ati ouy omye?" Thieron asked. Where are the others?

Nala didn't have a chance to answer as Etrie Ay'tir appeared in front of them, and Thieron stared at him, just as shocked as she was. Behind Etrie were Maya and Zuri.

Zuri...

Nala froze at the sight of her and almost forgot the dull pain starting to burn in her wrist. Zuri looked beautiful, even in the dark brown gear of the R'ies. Her copper curls were tied atop her head in a bun.

Zuri looked at her, similarly taken aback.

Nala's wrist hurt more as time passed, and she had to steady herself against the pain. Where had Ze gone? Had he really escaped? The pain was extremely sharp, worse than that night at the Sea Drive. Thieron looked fine; perhaps Aija was still somewhere close. Would Ze really escape without Aija? Or was Thieron better at hiding the pain? Or had Ze been caught by other Ytai here? Where was Luka?

Maya took out a blade, and Nala's hand slid into her coat to the holster. She froze. Her main blade wasn't there. How? Stunned, she took out her second blade and gripped it tightly. Where had it gone? She had surely secured it into the holster. She never went anywhere without it.

"Where are Aija and Ze?" Etrie asked calmly.

Why was Etrie here? He was among at least two hundred H'eon members. How had he even gained entry?

Cheers rang in the air, and she turned towards it to see that a crowd had gathered at a distance from them. Nala couldn't see what was happening.

And, then there were rifle shots from somewhere upstairs. The Gale must have arrived already.

"You won't get them," Thieron replied to Etrie, looking calm, drawing out his blade.

Was Nala the only one on edge? She took deep breaths to keep herself calm, the pain in wrist worsening. She couldn't show her discomfort on her face, couldn't show them she was getting weaker. Damn Ze!

Zuri was looking at her; all her hurt reflected in her eyes. Nala felt guilty; she flinched as the pain tore at her steadiness, threatening to render her unconscious.

Where were Luka, Aija, and especially Ze?

The firing got louder and more continuous, and she could see the humans descending the right side of the double-stairs. Then Kuna came from nowhere to stand by Zuri. He held Zuri in his arms protectively, and a pang of jealousy burst through Nala. What had changed in the past few weeks?

The firing came closer, and Etrie looked around, worried. He removed a gun and Nala stilled, fearing the worst.

A Ytai having a gun meant only one thing.
