Chapter 26, Into the mind
"You need to be careful, Jace," Magnus warned him.
Jace nodded and stood behind Clary, who was sitting on a chair. The plan was simple. Jace would enter Clary's mind and would try to mend the broken wall, shutting Raziel out. But, as always, there's a risk that it doesn't work. And if it doesn't work, the wall would never be able to be repaired again.
"Are you ready?" Jace asked Clary, looking at her with concern in his eyes.
Clary nodded weakly and stared ahead of her.
The last Herondale sighed and lightly grabbed Clary's head with his hands. The binding rune that Clary had drawn earlier began to light up on both Shadowhunters. Clarissa inhaled a sharp breath and her face turned heavenwards, eyes wide open. Jace tightened his grip on her head and Clary's eyes rolled into the back of her head while Jace's closed.
His eyes opened and Jace found himself standing in a pure white room, a damaged wall seen in the distance. He began running to it, but the wall seemed to get farther the more he ran.
Jace panted and slowly closed his eyes, focusing on the wall he needed to fix. He felt a light breeze before he found himself standing right in front of the wall.
"Whoah."
The word echoed through the room, bouncing off the sleek white walls. He could see holes scattered on the wall, some big and some small. The boy walked to a rather big gap and peered inside. He saw Raziel sitting on the ground with silver veins decorating his skin. It unnerved him seeing Raziel sitting there, defenseless, while he could do nothing to him. After all that he had done to Clary and his friends.
Jace inhaled and placed his hands flat against the cobblestone wall. His veins turned golden and began pulsing. The energy in his veins seemed to flow to his hands, leaving from his fingertips. Golden lines began to dance around the gray wall. That continued on until the whole wall was covered in golden marks.
Jace stepped back and admired his work. Something actually worked out for once, he thought. That was until the wall began to crack under the pressure of the lines. His eyes widened and he ran to the wall.
"No, no, no. This wasn't supposed to happen!" He stressed, trying to save Clarissa's mental barrier. But, to no avail, it crumbled while he helplessly watched.
Jace fell to his knees, head buried in his hands. He had to get out of there before he was buried under the stone wall.
➰
"Is it working?" Isda asked Raziel, who was sitting oddly close to her.
"Yes. The Shadowhunters failed to save Clarissa." His voice echoed through the room.
"Good."
Raziel looked at her and noticed that she was dressed more elegantly than usual, in an emerald green gown that fell like a waterfall and pooled around her feet.
"Are you going out?" he asked her, slightly jealous.
"No. Why'd you ask?" She was suspicious.
"No reason." Raziel stood right in front of Isda, only an inch between them.
"What are you doing?" her breaths became more labored.
"Testing something." He said before his lips crashed on hers, taking Isda's breath away.
Sure, she had found Raziel attractive, she couldn't deny that. But, she was surprised at his actions, considering that he was always brooding and sulking in dark corners.
At last, she kissed back.
➰
Jace his eyes opened and he stumbled back, noticing that his conscience found itself back in Magnus' living room.
"Clary!" he shouted while rushing to his lover's side. He caught her as she fell from the wooden chair that she was seated in.
"Did it work?" Isabelle asked, crouching down next to her best friend.
Jace was searching for words that he could say, but his mind was frozen. He couldn't form words.
He stroked Clary's hair but jumped back a little when Clary's eyes snapped open.
The surprising thing? They weren't green. No, they were a glowing blue.
