MATE-BALL

KRUEL's P.O.V

Samael.

That slimy son of a bitch.

Out of all the times he could show up, it just had to be now.

"Well, well, well. If it isn't the famous not-so-famous Alpha Kruel." He approached with that stupid smile he always had on his face.

"Hey Samael." I responded, wounding my arm around Azazel's waist, pulling her closer to my side.

"Really? After nine years of not having me around, that's the welcome I get." He smiled wider, showing the same set of white teeth I've wanted to punch out of his mouth for almost a decade now.

"I assume you heard about the mate-ball." I ignored his stupid statement.

"Of course. And you didn't even invite me." He fiend being hurt with both of his hands over his chest.

"And with good reason." I was getting upset and he was enjoying it.

"Good evening. Samael, is it?" Azazel stretched her hand out to him.

"That's what my friends call me. But you, my pretty lady, can call me Sam." He took her hand in his and leaned in to kiss the back of her hand but she withdrew her hand before I could react.

"Well, Sam... I'm the soon-to-be Luna, Azazel. But you, Samael, may address me as Luna Azazel."

"I see the Moon Goddess never disappoints you, cousin. A beautiful and fierce mate." He smirked at me. "I wonder what made her favor you so much."

"Maybe if you weren't such an asshøle, she'd bless you twice as much." I gritted out.

"Samael, if you don't mind me asking... Have you found your mate yet?" Azazel intervened.

"Sadly, not yet. I was hoping she'd be here but the possibility is slim." The way he sounded made me almost feel bad for him.

Just almost.

"Well, Samael... My mate and I will be taking our leave now. But please, help yourself with some refreshments." I definitely owed my mate for saving me from my pain in the ass cousin.

"Thank you, Luna Azazel." He smiled but it wasn't one of those silly smiles. It was an actual genuine smile. "See you later, Kruel." With that, Azazel steered me away from Samael and away from everyone.

"You two look so alike even with the masks on." Azazel breathed out. "If I wasn't standing next to you, I'd confuse him for you. Why don't you like him?"

"We can never agree to anything. He's too small minded and carefree for an alpha."

"Or you're too small minded to understand him." She rolled her eyes.

"Not now, Azazel. I can't deal with you reprimanding me."

"Fine. But try not to be so hard on him." She finalised and I tried my hardest to not fire back.

"Alpha Kruel!" The one alpha I tried to avoid yelled.

"Alpha Ashton, Luna Sapphire. I'm glad to see you made it."

"Cut the crap, Kruel." I guess Ashton just wanted to get this over and done with then. "Get the music rolling and get everyone in the ball room."

"Ballroom?" Azazel mind-linked.

"You'll see." I sent back. "I'll mind-link Christian to get everyone to the main-hall."

"Good." Ashton said.

"Hello there. I'm Sapphire, Ashton's mate." She stretched her hand out to Azazel.

"Azazel. Kruel's mate." They shook hands.

"Kruel, I'd like to speak with you in private." Ashton announced and I raised a brow at him. "It has something to do with a certain wanted shifter." He mind-linked the last part.

"Kruel, you asked me not to leave your side tonight." Azazel mind-linked warningly.

"It'll only take a minute." I tried to assure her.

"Your absence is equivalent to me breaking a promise that I can damn well keep, Kruel." She hissed.

"Only a minute, mate." I finalized, irritation and anger flashing in her hazel eyes in a quick blur of blue.

"A minute, Kruel. I mean it." She gave my hand a squeeze before reluctantly letting go.

"Right this way." I led Ashton to my office in the pack house. Offering him a seat opposite mine, my desk being the only barrier between us, I settled in my seat.

"What do you know?" I got straight to business. No point in beating about the bush.

"Sapphire thinks the shifter isn't actually real. She believes a witch has made herself appear to be one so that it's harder to catch her." Ashton said thoughtfully. "I don't doubt my mate's suspicions."

"Did she try locating her with the gem I gave you?" Azazel would kill me if she found out that I stole the purple crystal she took out of the shifter's heart but the more we waited for the rogues to come back, the more time we wasted. Xeus wasn't making any progress with the rogues we captured and kept in the underground cells. They would rather die than give us the information we need and my patience was thinning out.

"She tried and it used up so much of her life-force." The words were calm but I knew he hated me for what his mate lost over trying to locate the shifter who isn't a shifter after all.

"I'm sorry—"

"Your apologies are insignificant to me at the time being. I'd rather we not discuss my mate's health status unless you want me to rip your head off." His icy tone didn't faze me. It never did, but I wasn't going to upset him more. He couldn't take me but I wasn't in the mood to shred my suit to fight him.

"Alright then." I nodded once. "Where's Hunter?"

"Somewhere, out there, trying not to look so crazy looking for his mate." Ashton shrugged as though his brother's behavior was expected.

"Do you think she's here?" I inquired.

"She is. I saw her run away from him the moment she realized he was her mate."

"Aren't you going to help him?" What kind of brother watches his own little brother suffer over losing his mate's scent?

"It's fun watching the kid lose his head over something besides himself." Ashton shrugged.

A psychotic brother. That's who.

"Hunter will kill you when he finds out you knew where his mate was hiding." I smiled at the lunatic before me.

"I'd like to see him try." He chuckled.
