Dads. Do your faces light up when you first see your child in the morning or when you come home from work? Do you not understand that a child’s entire sense of value can revolve around what they see in your face when you first see them?

~Dan Pearce

I wanted to stay with Dan and his family and his friends. Forever.

Their home was so welcoming.

The people within were even more so.

But I caught the bus home: Kenji didn't work on Saturday's. I arrived at my home, to the all too familiar sound of a heated argument in the kitchen. I could hear Cassie and Mum, so I figured I'd go in there and check what was happening.

However, upon opening the kitchen door, I discovered in surprise that the row was entirely one sided.

Mum and Cassie stood side by side at one end of the table, anger blazing their features. Across from them, stood my father. He stood slumped, his eyes bright red and swollen, sunken into his sallow skin and framed by dark grey circles. A million lines etched into his grey face, he looked twice his real age. And the kitchen was filled to the brim with the unmistakable odour of sweat and alcohol.

I hovered in the doorway, swaying a little in shock.

"Dad?" I whispered hoarsely, earning my father's attention as he turned to me unsteadily.

I'd expected some amount of recognition in his eyes, but they remained dull. I'd yearned for some amount of tenderness in his face, but it remained blank. He stood silently for a few seconds, then raised his hand. I noticed the bundled up notes clutched into his palm and raised my own hand. He dropped the money into my grasp and then brushed past me. I heard the front door click shut.

Cassie burst into messy, noisy tears, and stormed past me into her bedroom. Mum stood dazed and furious, her hands balled into fists at her sides. Hesitantly, I stepped forward and pressed the money into her hand, feeling it tremble under my touch. Her face softened as she met my gaze, an unspoken apology.

I squeezed her hand and left the room, set on comforting my sister.
