The brightest summer morning yet.
The best day of the year.
The day of excitement and anguish.
It's all gotta be today. Why you ask? The thing is that today is the Annual Pokémon Giveaway, the day when the teens in a town are given their first Pokémon. From then on they are independent trainers; set on their own journey into adventures.
In Azel Town alone, there are twenty kids ready to get their first Pokémon. The Pokémon vary from the classic starters (Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, etc) to some wild Pokemon available in the vast world. The Pokémon Professor gives the Pokémon according to the persons aptitude. How that is graded is still a mystery but since the informative part is over....
It's about me.
My name is Tyler Auraze. (And I'm 100% aware that this is quite the boring start!)
As expected, I am a boy. Yep, get that straight. A boy not a girl. I live in Azel Town if you did not guess already, which is in Losto
Region. From tomorrow, I am finally becoming a Pokémon Trainer! My house is kinda small. Two floors, my room, my parents' room, the kitchen and a bathroom. If you count the living room as a room, then add that too.
As I have said, the Annual Pokémon Giveaway is today at mid-day. I am beyond hyped about that 'cause all I wanted in since 10 is my very own Pokémon.
In the morning, I prepared everything. My room was a mess as it is, full of papers, books and other Pokémon figurines. Putting everything in place was tough. I am supposed to be away for a looooong time so, you know. Let's give mom some rest for a time.
My bag was filled with supplies. Some necessary potions, repels, food and toiletries. (What? Hygiene is important.) The Pokédex which Prof. Oak gave me was strapped on my belt. The badge pack on my outer jacket pocket. The most important thing, the PokéBalls, were in my backpack and that was it.
Next was the most frustrating task. Wait till noon. But that could wait. There was a knock on the door. When I opened it, it was none other than my arch-enemy, nah that won't do. ArchNemesis is more like it. Eliot...
He had blonde hair which he looked after well. With that ugly stupid grin of his, he said, " Sup loser. Just came to say hi before I never see you again. "
" Shouldn't I be saying that, Eliot, or should I say, idiot. "
He snickered. " Well well well. Don't get hot there. Since you won't be joining us in the Giveaway, I wanted to say goodbye. "
" Oh, lets see who says bye to who."
He laughed his idiotic laugh. "You're on, loser. Although it's obvious who'll win. "
He walked away.
Although this was a daily routine, this time, it felt different. His silver eyes glowed in mockery. He felt confident on thise words. But I paid no heed. Got more important stuff to attend to.
Noon came at last!! Wooo!
Saying my goodbyes, I ran for the Town Centre. As expected, it was an enormous crowd. I spotted a few familiar faces here and there but the rest were unknown to me ALTHOUGH we live in the same town. It's not my fault that our house is on the outskirts.
Professor Samuel Oak was on the stage next to a box with nineteen PokéBalls. My heart pumped with excitement as the seconds passed by. When I felt that someone was staring at me, I turned back to see, without surprise, Eliot with that idiot grin of his. I focussed on the event at hand. Come on, I may never see Eliot again which was a dream-come-true.
Oak began speaking, " Hello there young trainers. We know the ocassion right? I am the Pokémon Professor of Azel-"
" We know! " Oak was interrupted by the trainers.
Oak grinned. " Oh yeah right. This is 'my' town. Fine then! Today is the day my young future to-be champions are going to exit the tiny cramped space called Home into the World of Pokémon. Trust me when I say this, it is a world bristling with excitement. You, young fellows are going to help me complete the Pokédex!"
What? I have been holding on to this thing since, I dont know, forever? He wants us to complete it now?
" Well you see... I messed up in my lab. The data brought to me by the previous trainers got...umm...deleted. "
" Typical Pokémon Professor, " I heard a girl say.
Oak grinned. " So you see, please don't ignore a call for help from this old man. Please? I have made it easier too! Just scanning a Pokémon would be enough to capture the data. Remember the good old days when we had to catch Pokémon. Good ol' days..."
Eliot piped up. " Sorry for my interruption prof but I think we get the idea. Scan Pokémon and complete the Pokédex while travelling. Simple enough. Could you pass on the part where you actually, give the Pokémon. "
" In a hurry I see. Very well, without further adue, come up on the stage when I call your name. "
Now the mixed feelings of the crowd emerged. Tension, nervousness, excitement. (I should probably find another word for excitement. How about enthusiasm?)
First, to my surprise, Eliot's name was called. " No. 1 Eliot Croveld. I give you........ Squirtle!"
That stupid smile of his flashed across his stupid face. Well, nothing to worry about. My name will be called sooner or later.
" No. 2 Margret Lowence. I grant you...... Charmander! "
Okay. Soon enough...
" No. 3 Rider Opolo. I present to you........ Chikorita! "
Seven more numbers were called upon. Cold sweat began drifting down my face. I was supposed to be called in the first ten; if not three. My heart skipped a beat everything it was not my name...
" No. 15 Tiyana Phoenix. I gift you....... Zorua! "
Yep, something IS wrong. Why is my name not being called? At least let me be the last one...
" And finally, No. 19 Bert Sundae. Here comes......... Turtwig! "
There was a roar of happiness. Everyone had got their Pokémon. Probably one of their favourites. But... Here was Tyler Auraze; without a Pokémon to call his own among his peers who received theirs.
Eliot laughed when my eyes searched him. That ever so stupid eyes and lips...
" What did I say loser? Why did you even bother coming here even after I 'informed' you of the state you are in. You are too weak to be a trainer, Tyler. Both in body and mind. Ha ha ha! "
I tried my best to keep the waters in check. Not waters of sadness or anguish. But for the burning rivalty which had begun since childhood. I refused to let go, like what if I didn't get a Starter? There are milllions of other Pokémon in this....this....
GAH!
I couldn't take anymore of it. I ran away before anyone could see me - pathetic and hopeless.
