When I walked into the next class I felt a shiver down my spine as all eyes were on me. I was new, yes, and I was also exceedingly nervous. But I guess the main reason why they were staring at me was the big fat red blob of juice stain on my freakishly white shirt. I pulled my denim jacket over in a pathetic attempt to cover it.
"Ah, Miss Rider...please, take a seat," the English teacher, who stood tall, old, and disapproving. His stubbly goatee beard made his words so much more amusing. However, first impressions were crucial. And whatever speck or remnant of dignity I had left off for my very first day in New Haven High School was now on the line. I quickly hurried down to take a seat. I glanced as I heard chuckles along and whispers. All to be expected, I guess, but somehow still stung.
I cringed and gritted my teeth.
"Nice fashion choice," a girl with blonde hair tied in a bun, and dark purple lips said. She winked at me and handed me a tissue and I quickly dabbed it to remove at least some of the stain.
"What happened to it?" she whispered.
"I had a clumsy moment with my juice bottle,"
The girl raised her brow then turned to focus on the teacher. His name was Mr Pillard and he was a taskmaster. I scrambled to write down everything, but the girl sitting on my right who just talked to me earlier tapped my foot. I glanced up at her, and she pointed at her book. "He's just reading everything from the textbook, you can borrow it later."
"Thanks?"I said cautiously. She was being nice. Overtly too nice. She was beyond gorgeous, on fleek style and laid back. Normally someone like this would not talk to me unless I proved myself to be 'cool'.
The bell finally rang and we started packing everything. "I'm Ellie..."The blonde introduced herself.
"Agnus, "I responded. I flicked away my dark brown hair that was tied up in a half up half down. "Thanks for not looking at me like I'm a new freak."
Ellie shrugged. "I know what it's like to be the new girl here. Trust me...it sucks...so, consider me your master and you're my apprentice."
I frowned and she laughed. "That came out wrong..."
"Watch a lot of movies?" I asked her.
"TV-Series, and too many to count," she handed me her book. "What's your class schedule like?"
"Pretty stacked up..." I handed her my sheet and she looked over it.
"Well, it's all normal. How bout we meet up afterwards? There is a great cafe I'd like to show you, and my brother is performing so..."
"That's so cool," I said and nodded. It was extra interesting to hear her brother was a finger. the question was whether he was actually good, or she was just there to support and comfort the guy..."I would love to. Then I can finally tick it off my bucket list."
"To go to a coffee shop?"
"No", I shook my head and laughed. "Make a new friend."
Ellie smiled. "Glad to be of service."
School dragged on for a few hours, and I ran to the exit to meet up with Ellie. She was patiently waiting for me as I lugged my bag over my back.
"Are you packing for the apocalypse?"
I frowned. "No, it's just everything I was required to bring..."
Ellie placed her hand on my shoulder. "Trust me, honey, in this school, half of the things you learn here is useless, and the other half of the things you need to bring here is pointless. Didn't you get a locker?"
"Yeah, but I can't seem to get it open..."
"Why not?" Ellie grinned.
"Cause the stupid code they gave me doesn't work..."
"We'll sort that out tomorrow..."
"That would be great, thank you so much," I said with a huge smile plastered on my face. "You are so nice to me."
Ellie shrugged at this. "As I said, I know what it's like being the new girl, and I kind of don't want the same thing to happen to you as what happened to me. Come on, my brother will kill me if I'm late."
