They trotted across the muddy path in single file. Tired, hungry and thirsty, they attempted to find a place to stay, but the huge field they were walking through showed no sign of a place to stay.
It had rained the day before, and yet the crops were still pretty high. Sunset finished its performance and the moon greeted them. One collapsed, falling into the crops with a thud. Everyone, with the energy they could muster, gathered around him and called his name.
He had fainted, and it didn't look as if he was going to wake up anytime soon. He was tired, and in that state he might stay unconscious for the next 24 hours, which was not what they needed right now.
Some vouched for leaving him and continuing on without him, but the majority won over as taking him with them, each of them taking turns to carry him.
The blonde, short one went to go pick up his friend, deciding to go first. He wasn't as heavy as he thought he would be, but the exhaustion in him took a toll on his speed. He trailed behind the group a couple of meters, adjusting how he was carrying the boy every 10 seconds.
Eventually, he was behind the group by around 50 meters when he dropped the body and dropped to his knees. Black spots started appearing in his vision, when he saw something before he collapsed, letting out a short, shrill scream which caught the groups attention.
They all turned almost at the same time, only to freeze in fear. There were figures, around 10, standing with red ruby eyes, baring fangs and hissing.
"Patrick! Fabian!" one shouted, attempting to run towards them.
"Don't even try Shaan," Amandeep hissed, pulling him back.
"Are those..?" Mati trailed off.
The word never left his lips. They all felt as if they were under a spell, they couldn't tear their eyes away from the red eyes glinting in the moonlight. They didn't notice how the eyes got closer and closer, they just felt frozen.
Rain started pouring. Thunder and lightning raged, a storm swirling above their heads as the red eyes were a few mere meters away from them. The sound of lightning made Shaan snap out of it, and he realized how close the eyes were him. He shouted at them all, attempting to call their names, which fortunately made them snap out of it.
They all ran together, with the useless idea of thinking they outrun what they thought were Vampires. Amandeep felt himself being pulled back, dragged through the crops, the rain still pouring. He scrambled, looking up to see the red ruby eyes and fangs, he twisted and grasped at anything to stop it. Which was completely useless.
One by one they all started getting dragged, the storm getting worse, as if a hurricane was building up.
"No way in hell am I dying like this!" Jesse cried, clawing at the creature, trying to overpower it.
They were suddenly stilled and the dragging stopped. All of the creatures leaned in in unison, fangs ready to sink into their necks.
Mati shut his eyes tight, hoping the death would be quick. He felt the sharp tip slowly pierce through his skin.
BANG!
A gunshot rung in his ears.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
It stopped. They all got up, instantly looking towards the source of the sound. The creatures were gone, dead on the floor. There, standing around 20 meters away from them was a girl, and they just watched as she shifted her weight onto one foot, placing one hand on her hip as she slung the gun over her shoulder, holding it like a backpack.
