“As soon as the Pharisees left, they met with Herod’s supporters looking for a way to destroy Jesus.” As far as this piece of the gospel is concerned, how do we feel about this? Indeed, it’s so sad because Jesus is all good and merciful yet they’ve returned something opposite to Him (Jesus). Perhaps, all the story of Jesus in His ministry laid many contradictions and of this cause maybe are the people called the Pharisees.
Who are these people? They were the ones who knew a lot and thus come their power. However, if they (Pharisees) do have this great chunk of knowledge and power, why didn’t they believe in Jesus who is the truth and the power HIMSELF? I do believe what happened to the Pharisees is that they’ve been stuck with this sickness which is denounced but acceptable by the society or in simple term- Corruption.
Quoting Pope Francis in his book, Corruption and Sin On Self Accusation, “But how difficult it is for the force of truth to break open hearts that are corrupt! They are so wrapped up in their self-sufficiency that they admit no questioning. A corrupt person is one who ‘lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God (Lk. 12:21).’ ”
Most likely, what happened to the Pharisees was not just some sort of corruption but probably the corruption of the best. Why? It’s because they (Pharisees) were considered great teachers of the law of God down to the minutest norms of the society. However, they were consumed by these things that they subtly realized they are the truth and the measure themselves. Thus forgetting they’re just instruments. As far as the corruption of the Pharisees is concerned, no need to discuss, the Bible has a lot of it.
Obviously, this sickness lingers even in the present. I believe, this serves a halt for us People of God. Do we settle for fickleness, frivolity, triumphalist atmosphere, and self-containment? Perhaps, the silent heart could answer it in all honesty. May the Lord Jesus Christ pierce our filth-armored hearts so that we may be able to weep. Thus, seeing His grace clearly that it may flow in our woundedness. Amen
