One day, when I was about to depart from a pilgrimage site, a nun- who was one of the caretakers of the pilgrimage site- accompanied me to the gate. While she was accompanying me, an old man approached the nun, shook her hand and said, "How are you sister?" The nun replied, "I am well. May I excuse myself first I will just accompany my friend to the gate." Hearing this, the old man shook my hand and asked, "Are you a priest or seminarian?" "Hmmm," I responded. When I answered the old man, his eyes brightened and then began to enumerate the many things he has done for the church. Also, he introduced himself to be a multi-millionaire and highly influential man. Then among the many things the old man said, what struck me was, "You know father so and so and his seminarians? I am their benefactor, well without me, they will not be able to survive. Ako ang bumubuhay sa mga yan!"
Many times, we try to define ourselves by the influence that we have, the money that we possess, the feat we achieve, and the dependability of others on us. The things mentioned are our ego boosters and at the same time our vampires that drain our inner peace and our sense of being if not met. Thus we forget the essential measure of our being, that is, love. How much have we loved? Have we tried loving others the way God loves us? Have we loved without counting the cause? Have we made ourselves invisible to proclaim a big loving God?
May we be reminded of today's gospel to place Jesus' commandment of love in our minds, hearts, and deeds. Amen.
