I wanted to write a story that portrayed how someone managed to accomplish their dream while also dealing with college and how to have a healthy balance between those two. My mom and I co-owned our bakery from 2016-2019 and I had to juggle classes along with the business. Although my mom helped me with some of the orders, I still had to juggle a lot. I wanted to portray the challenges and triumph of going after your dreams.
2 what is something you struggled constructing with your story?
Definitely writing a male POV and making that perspective as authentic as possible. One thing that helped me to make this aspect of my story easier was reflecting on my past experiences with having different kinds of male friends. Some are chill and laid back while others are more serious. Some are procrastinators when it comes to homework while others like to get things done early. I used those times I had with my guy friends to try and make a realistic story about how some guys think and behave.
3 what did you enjoy writing most of your story?
I definitely enjoyed writing the descriptions of places and the desserts since that added to the overall story I'm trying to tell
4 what's the overall response of your story from your readers?
It's mostly positive, with one reader saying that the beginning of the story made her feel at home since she was away from her family and another reader saying that she loved the descriptions that I added to make the story more real.
5 is your story a stand alone novel or a piece of a series ?
It's a stand alone, but who knows? Maybe I'll write a sequel to the story once I'm done with college.
6 what would you like your readers to take away from your story?
I would like for them to know that they can accomplish anything they put their minds to. I would also like them to take away the importance of surrounding themselves with friends that would both lift them up and be real with them when they need it the most.
7 what advice would you provide to fellow writers, when it comes to focusing on their own story?
Don't give up on your story just because you don't get votes or comments during the first week. It takes time to write a good story and even more for it to grow. It took me seven years and three months to get to where I am. In my case, critique threads are what really made my story better than it was before. I'll admit that it was scary at first, but I learned not to take the criticism personally and applied it to my book. It was then that my book got positive comments and votes so I would say, "Don't give up, don't take criticism personally and use those critiques to make your story better."
8 does your main character share any similarities to yourself?
I'm glad you asked and the answer is yes. We're both passionate when it comes to baking and are slowly learning to say no when it comes to people asking us to take on little tasks that aren't profitable.
9 what is something about your story you believe would draw in new readers?
Definitely the summary of the story. Most of the people who have read my book love a good romance that shows what a healthy relationship between a guy and a girl looks like.
10 do you have any future projects?
I'm currently working on a new book for the Open Novella Contest. It's a sequel to my book, which I'm hoping my readers will come to enjoy.
