1 what inspired the idea of your story?
In the summer of 1994, I was a bored 11 year old. I spent the summers with my grandparents, and they couldn't entertain me all the time. So I had to entertain myself. I started writing.
2 what is something you struggled constructing with your story?
my dream is 25 years in the making, it's gone through several incarnations until I realized what it needed to be for today's youth
3 what did you enjoy writing most of your story?
The stage is horse racing, so I'd have to say REALLY fast horses.
4 what's the overall response of your story from your readers?
North Oak (the series) is the bestselling contemporary young adult horse racing series in the country. The first 7 books are frequently in the top 10 of the young adult equestrian genre on Amazon.
5 is your story a stand alone novel or a piece of a series ?
Series. And I like to call it heir to the Thoroughbred Series, which was super popular when I was a kid.
6 what would you like your readers to take away from your story?
North Oak champions tough kid and teen issues, all set against the high-stakes fast paced world of horse racing. I hope one day to meet the person who says "Me. You wrote this for ME." And I'll hug them and tell them "I know."
7 what advice would you provide to fellow writers, when it comes to focusing on their own story?
Make daily word goals. Never kick yourself if you don't get all the way there. You're not a failure unless you quit.
8 does your main character share any similarities to yourself?
I think all my characters have some sliver of me in them. Little horcruxes of myself ;)
9 what is something about your story you believe would draw in new readers?
A snarky, troubled teen, and really fast horses. North Oak has heart.
10 do you have any future projects?
North Oak #8 will begin work in the next month or so. I hope to have #9 and #10 out by year's end.
