chapter twenty one.
burdens of all

THERE was only one thing Georgine Brodeur loved more than anything else (well, other than her mother, Jasper, Bella, her new family━━okay, so maybe there were things Georgine loved more, but that's besides the point!), and that was annoying Emmett Cullen.

The sudden loss Georgine felt in her heart when her mother had been told of her death, was tremendous, to say the least. It was as though someone had taken their weapon, pierced a hole through her skin and grabbed her heart right out her chest. Squeezing the organ as tight as they possibly could, before the once beating heart full of life crumbled to nothing but dried blood and once-pumping veins.

She felt broken, torn in half, to never be pieced back together again.

The rest of the family could easily feel her bland, almost-nonexistent emotions as they watched Bella and Edward wave Charlie Cullen goodbye from the front porch steps, timid smiles and trembling lips. It would be hard for Bella, probably more so now that their plan had changed almost completely, but at least she still continued to have her father in her life, knowing she was somewhat... okay. Or, as okay as one could be in their type of situation.

Georgine was situated between Jasper and Emmett, the former allowing his fiancée's arm to wrap itself around his own for her own comfort, so she could remember he was there, and that she wasn't alone. Ever now and again, Emmett would glance down at his new sister, concern laced within his dark irises before looking back up again━━not that she would notice. Georgine was too focused on the never-ending thoughts that swarmed around her mind, banging themselves against her skull, begging for any type of release. But, she wouldn't give in━━she didn't wish to burden those around her with all her problems. At some point, she knew someone would force her to talk about everything that was eating away at her (most likely Jasper or Bella, but it really could be anyone, now━━she had grown so close to all of them, in such a little amount of time; it was heart-warming, to be so accepted), but for now, she'd let Bella swim in the bliss she was feeling at having her father in her life, and him knowing about Renesmee.

"Well done, Bella," Jasper complimented the girl as herself and Edward turned towards them. There was pride in his voice, of course there was, but also something else Georgine couldn't quite decipher━━venom? condescendence? "Never seen a newborn show that kind of restraint."

It was true━━Bella had been closer to a human than any of the others had, including Georgine, in such a short time span since her change. They were all surprised, but proud. None of them would've been able to do it. Sure, Georgine had seen her mother not long after her own change, but that was different, almost. Georgine had taken her time when it came to learning to restrain herself, understanding her own limits and when not to force herself into situations just because others had, too. For Bella to have done it so easily, there had to be something else within the mix they were all missing... but what?
