chapter twenty three. chaos times two
THE Cullen house seemed to be playing home for more people than it ever had before. Granted, there was that graduation party Alice had been desperate to hold, but even then, this time felt like there were more. Maybe it was the fact that they weren't people, at all━━they all adorned red or amber eyes, symbolising their new way of life. Each and every one of them (minus Jacob and Renesmee, of course) had lived enough lives of a thousand people, seen more things, experienced so much more than the average person. Maybe that's why it felt a lot more crowded.
Every witness was forced to meet Renesmee; they had to bear witness to who she really was, and not who she was being made out to be. That was their purpose, after all━━to bear witness against the Volturi.
In a sense, Georgine Brodeur couldn't quite believe they were able to get others on their side. It wasn't a lot, but that was something they'd all secretly anticipated. The Volturi were a group to be feared━━vampires feared them openly, for they all knew what their punishment would be if they were to ever cross a line that shouldn't have been crossed, in their books; and humans feared them covertly. It was ironic━━where the Volturi resided in Italy, the population of the town had no idea who was truly ruling over them. If they had, Georgine didn't know how the outcome would work. Would they fight, or would they run? She'd hope they'd do the right thing; those with a brain surely would.
Benjamin was someone Carlisle and Esme had brought back with them on their travels. From what Georgine had witnessed, he seemed like a wild spirit when around the right people. She hadn't spoken to him much, but just watching how he interacted with everyone from a short distance was able to confirm her thoughts. The more she thought about it, the more Georgine came to realise they needed someone like Benjamin on their side. Ever so far was scared━━understandably━━but what they didn't know they needed was someone acted carefree; like going up against the Volturi and questioning their position wasn't something to be feared, like it was easy. Georgine respected the man for that.
A group of them were outside, watching on as Benjamin met Renesmee. The child would show him her special gift of being able to reveal her thoughts, show him that she wasn't an immortal child, like the Volturi believed.
A smile grew upon Benjamin's lips as Renesmee showed him what she could do, red eyes alight with excitement and anticipation. It seemed Benjamin had more up his own sleeve, too, as he took Renesmee's hand on top of his own. What sound like a light gust of wind━━only lasting for half a second━━worked it way into her ears, and Georgine noticed the anticipation grow more and more as he watched for Renesmee's reaction. Then, he opened his hands up, further and further into the air, a swirl of what looked like small grains of dirt floating up from the child's hand and into the air.
