Chapter 15

I quickly withdraw my hands from Nathan's and try to avoid Jessica's glare that is surely piercing holes through my skull.

"I said, what the hell is going on!?" Jessica repeats herself. She's looking at me for an answer like I am more to blame for the situation than Nathan is, which is not the case since he kissed me first.

Thankfully, Nathan steps in before I have to say anything. "Jessica, I'm not sure I like your tone of voice."

Jessica snarls at him. "I don't fucking like you holding hands with that slut, so I guess we're even."

Nathan winces when she swears at him. She must not do that very often.

"Please calm down, Jessica," Nathan says in a mere whisper.

Jessica's eyes widen and her nostrils flare with anger. "Don't ever tell an angry girl to calm down!"

I decide it's round about my time to step in. "It wasn't his fault Jessica. It was mine."

Jessica's head snaps round and her brown- almost black now with anger- eyes burn holes in mine.

She starts moving towards me with her finger pointed accusingly at me. "I swear, you aren't going to live to see tomorrow-"

Nathan steps in between Jessica and I. "Stop it Jess. It wasn't her fault at all. I dragged her out here to apologise for your behaviour, which is something you should be doing yourself."

Jessica scoffs at this. "Apologise to her after I just caught her red-handed with you?"

Nathan gives her a slow nod of his head, making it perfectly clear that he wanted her to apologise. She ignores him and pushes him aside to get to me. I flinch before she is even able to lay a finger on me, which just shows how weak I really am.

Nathan, surprisingly blurts out, "Jessica, we're over."

This freezes Jessica in her place. She doesn't quite know what to say, so she slaps me instead. As I stand there, cupping my red cheek, she finds exactly the words she wants to say.

"You did this, you ruined my relationship. If you had just stayed out of my way like I asked, none of this would have happened-"

Nathan cuts her off again. "None of this was her fault Jessica. I just realised that I don't want to be with someone who treats other people like shit. I didn't want to be treated like shit anymore, Jess, that's why we're over. Now leave Rebecca alone."

Jessica is completely gobsmacked by this, so it's all she can do to run away before anyone can see the tears that are sure to start falling.

Did that seriously just happen? Did I just kiss my bully's boyfriend- the boy I used to fantasize about kissing- then stick up for him? Did he stick up for me in return? I was so confused by this turn of events, that I wasn't even sure whether it had happened.

It is confirmed that this did indeed happen when I turn my head away from the spot that Jessica ran in, round to face Nathan, who is actually smiling.

"Why are you smiling?" I ask in disbelief.

His grin just spreads even more across his face. "You have no idea what you have done, do you?" I shake my head so he continues. "You have freed me from her hold, which I have been trying to do for weeks. You also just stuck up to the bully and humiliated her. It might only have been in front of me, but it will eat her alive."

I remain silent, thinking over his words in my head. Have I finally found a way to stop Jessica from picking on me? Or have I just made myself more of a target? I guess I'll find out soon enough.
