Light streams through the small gap in my bedroom curtains. My eyelids flutter open and I let out a yawn as I stretch over to check the time on my phone. Eleven O'clock. I smile to myself. It's the longest sleep I've had in a while. As I stretch my arms, I accidentally hit Eilidh in the face.
"Go away," she mumbles and turns around so she's not facing me. I give her another nudge, but this time on purpose.
"What?" she moans at me.
I sit up in my sleeping bag. "Do you know what tomorrow is?"
"Monday?" she says sarcastically. I give her a fake laugh as she pulls her sleeping bag back over her head. I pull it back down and frustrated, Eilidh turns around and pushes me over. I fall back onto the floor in fits of laughter.
"What do you want?" she asks angrily. "I was having a really nice sleep."
"Well on Monday, it will be the last day to enter that One Direction contest. So today, we need to get like everyone in our family to enter, so if they win, we still get to go!"
She mutters something to herself that I don't hear. "That's what you woke me for?"
I nod. "I really want to win," I groan.
She looks at me and sighs. She takes a look around my room, which is very much like hers- covered in One Direction posters and calendars. "I know, so do I." I see her fingers slowly curling around the edge of her pillow. "But there's no need to wake me up for that! We have all day!"
Even though I was expecting it, I cannot dodge the pillow that heads towards my face. I pick up mine in return and knock Eilidh over with it. I hold the pillow over her face. "Do you surrender?"
My bedroom door opens and my mum enters. "So you girls are finally awake." She takes in the scene before her. "Girls, you're eighteen."
"You're never too old to have pillow fights," we say together.
I put my pillow down and help Eilidh up. "Let's go get some breakfast."
**
As I stuff pancakes into my mouth I try speaking to Eilidh about our plans for the day. My mum glares at me and gives me a 'tut'. "Don't eat with your mouth full Rebecca."
"Sorry," I mumble, still with a mouth full of pancakes. My mum shakes her head at me and leaves the room. "It's like she thinks you actually care about the way I eat."
"What?" she asks purposely doing the same.
"That's why we're best friends," I laugh.
I push my chair out from underneath the table and it lets out an ear-screaching sound. I screw my face up at the horrible noise as I leave my dishes in the sink. Eilidh does the same and we go through to the living room. My mum hasn't noticed that we have entered the room so I give her the most stupid look ever and she gives me a knowing look back. We sneak up and jump over the couch into the spots beside my mum. She jumps with fright and gives us both a frown, mine more of a glare than a frown.
"In a couple of weeks, you guys will be leaving school and going to University in Glasgow. You need to start acting like adults."
"We just like to have fun, that's all," I smile reassuringly at her.
Her gaze softens as she looks lovingly into my eyes. "I'm busy telling you that you should grow up, while I'm really thinking you're growing up too fast."
