Nikita

There were a lot of villages around but only one carried what I wanted. What I needed. Soon, night fell and the guards wanted to stop.

“No. I will not stop. I shall see you in Mout then.” I snapped the reins harder, clicking at my horse to run. The guards sighed and continued on until we reached Mout, nearly an entire day’s ride away from the castle. We slowed the horse and pulled our cloak hoods up to hide our faces.

“Do not stray, my lady. We shall be close.” A guard paused and tied the horses up, lifting me off mine.

“Samuel. You will be with me.” I grabbed his arm and held his hand, tangling our fingers together. “If anyone asks, we are a newlywed couple looking for a lost relative.” I whispered into his ear when he went to pull away.

 “What of the Marks?”

“We’ll say we got them someplace different. On our upper backs or thighs. Just make sure your answer matches mine.”

“So, what is the need of this sudden trip?” he asked, pulling me close.

“Dragons. I need a special casing for them to hatch.”

“You want them to hatch?” he nearly yelled, eyes widening.

“Hush now, pet. They are simply chicken eggs. What could go wrong?” I shrugged and then gave him a look as we resumed walking. “And how am I supposed to continue the tradition of handing my daughter dragon eggs if I do not have anything to breed?” I reminded him, looking through the small street market.

“You plan to have a daughter?”

“One day.” I shrugged and picked up a bracelet, pretending to be interested as the woman smiled eagerly.

“With Nathaniel?” Samuel scoffed and rolled his eyes, tugging at my hand. She laughed as we left.

“Does it matter to you?” I stopped at another stand, looking through the fruits.

“Well…no. No. Not really.” He shrugged and looked away when I smiled, giggling.

I turned and stroked his cheek, getting on my toes to whisper in his ear, “I like it when you stutter.” I bit my lip as I pulled back slightly, looking up into his blue eyes.

“What are you doing there, princess?” he murmured, wrapping his arms around my waist.

“Playing my part. As usual.” I leaned in to kiss his cheek before turning back to the market.

“Might I interest you in some supper? We are having goat.” An old woman smiled at us and gestured to her tent, leaning on her cane.

“Oh, no thank you. We are actually looking for a relative. Maybe you have heard of him. His name is Eric.” I nodded, pulling back from Samuel.

“Eric? I believe I do know of one. Come this way.” She started down the dirt road, pointing to a tall house, chuckling. “You two make a wonderful couple. Why hide your faces though?” she asked, losing her smile.

“We are not all that used to the cold weather here.” I lied, knocking on the door.

“Alright then. Supper will be waiting if you want some.” She waved and went into the tent, glaring back at us as the door opened.

“Who are you and why do you knock at supper time?” a man asked, leaning against the doorway. I pushed past him, scoffing when he grabbed my arm. I dropped my hood and he grinned, pulling me into a hug. “Dear old Nikki. What are you doing here? Oh come in, come in.” Eric waved Samuel in when he hesitated.

“I found the eggs.”

Eric glanced at Samuel after giving me a look.

“He knows. He is my guard. Samuel, this is my cousin, Eric.” I introduced, gesturing to him.

“You want the case, don’t you? Well then, come with me.” He led me to the staircase and reached under them, pulling out something covered in a sheet.

“Samuel, you will have to carry this on your saddle. If it breaks, so does your neck.”
