Nikita's POV
“Samuel, do you think I’m selfish?” I asked, playing with a piece of my long hair.
“No. What makes you think that?”
“Will you distract me? I have very sad thoughts right now and I don’t like them at all.” I complained, fighting off the urge to cry.
“Um, how?”
“Anything.” I felt tears roll down my cheeks and I quickly wiped them away.
“I love you.” he whispered, kissing a tear off my cheek.
I leaned into his chest, hiding my face in his shirt. “I love you too.”
“Everything will be ok, Nikita. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”
“If I do not return to the castle, my sister will be forced to marry Nathaniel and then I will truly never be able to return. He will hurt her, Samuel.”
“Ryker will be there. He will protect her.”
“Then Nathaniel will hurt him too. I need to go back or everyone I love will be injured.”
“Nikki, you cannot go back. You have already broken your oath and if they find out, Nathaniel will the least of our problems.”
“What are my other options?” I snapped, trying not to pay attention to fact that this was the first time he had shortened my name.
“You can stay here with me. We can travel around and live out a happy life.”
“You and I both know that is not my destiny.”
“Then change it. You once said the future is not set in stone.”
“What would we do then? We would be on the run from the castle for the rest of our lives.”
“Not if we got Hilary on our side. She would become queen and she could tell them to forget about us.”
“Hilary wants me back in the castle. What makes you think she will help me?”
“You are her sister. She loves you. If you tell her about our…situation, then I’m sure she would understand.”
I sighed and took a peek up at him. He was already gazing down at me, his blue eyes locked on mine.
“And what is our situation? Are we together?” I murmured, going back to playing with my hair.
“If you want us to be.”
“I do. Do you?”
“Nikita, I have been longing for today since I first laid eyes on you. Of course I want us to be together.”
“From the first day? So, you knew you loved me from that moment?” I teased, smiling as I straightened up a bit so I wouldn’t have to tilt my head back to look at him.
“From the very first second you walked into the room.”
“And why did you take so long to tell me?”
“That is a question I will ask myself for the rest of my life.”
I giggled and hugged him tighter, feeling his large, warm hands run through my hair a few times.
I then looked down at my own hands and got curious. I grabbed his wrist and tugged it away from my head, putting it on my lap. I then placed my hand over his, measuring.
“What are you doing, my lady?”
“Your hand is so much bigger than mine.” I whined, pouting.
“I love your small hands. They are adorable.” He lifted my hands up and kissed both of them as I laughed again.
“How can hands be adorable?”
“I don’t know but your hands are still adorable.”
I scoffed and rolled my eyes before leaning in to kiss his cheek. “Well then thank you.”
“Nikita…can I kiss you?” he whispered, reaching to push a strand of hair from my face.
“You never have to ask.” I mumbled back as I sat in his lap.
He smiled before pressing his lips to mine.
We sat there for a few moments, wrapped in each embraces before I heard a small chirp.
Then Caspian was in my face, pushing Samuel away.
“Caspian.” I scolded, lifting him off my shoulder and placing him down on the bed.
I heard Diantha’s smooth intelligent voice in my head. I cloaked us for as long as I could, mother.
“You were very quick to act, my sweet. You did excellent.” I cooed, leaning down to kiss the tip of her nose. She purred under my approval and crawled into my lap. “Samuel, I don’t believe you have fully met Diantha yet.”
He stroked her little head gently, smiling as her head leaned into his palm.
I wrapped my arms around his neck loosely, giving him plenty of room. I couldn’t help the yawn that escaped my lips.
One of his hands started rubbing my back, his fingers slowly sliding up and down my spine. “Are you tired, my lady?”
I nodded and he stood up, Diantha jumping off my lap. He lay me down in the bed and pulled the covers up, kissing my forehead.
“Stay?” I tangled my fingers with his and moved to the side to make room for him.
He crawled in next to me and took me back in his arms, his lips pressing onto the top of my head.
“I love you.” he murmured into my ear, starting to rub my back again, this time even slower.
“Mm, I love you too.” I mumbled, resting my head on his chest. I fell asleep in his strong, warm arms with a smile on my face.
