Nikita

“I’m afraid I didn’t have a chance to introduce myself. I am Nathaniel of Wavet.” The tall man held out his hand the next morning as I paused by the stairs. He kissed my hand as I curtsied.

“Nikita.” I smiled lightly as I went downstairs.

“So, Nikita, your father suggested I spend some time with you today. Is there a problem with that?” he asked, following me.

Yes. There was a problem.

“No. I am, after all, your bride. A few moments is all I can spare though.” I warned, glancing back at him.

“That is fine. I shall meet you by the fountain, in say an hour.” he suggested, smiling hesitantly.

“Make it two. I have a fitting and they always take their time.”

“Very well. I shall see you then.” He nodded before going into the kitchen.

I bit my lip as Hilly walked over.

“Well?” she asked, leading me into the dressing room downstairs where several woman were lined up, waiting.

“We’re supposed to meet at the fountain in two hours.” I walked over to the mirrors and sighed as I extended my arms out.

“And will you go?” Hilly asked, staring at me.

“I must. My kingdom depends on it. I shall not let my kingdom down.”

Samuel

“I am only doing this because you are new.” The girl handed me a loaf of bread with a smile as she pointed to a table.

“Thank you. So, is there anything important I should know?” I asked, sitting down.

“Yes actually. The king is very protective. If you doubt for a single moment you can protect either of those girls, walk away now. If you slip up, if you make a mistake, your heart will be displayed on a platter. Onto the princesses. As you may know, there are two of them. Hilary is two years older. She has black hair. She’s very sweet but you probably won’t see much of her. She spends most of her time in the garden. She will be very easy to guard. It is Nikita you must watch for. She is one we have not seemed to tame quite yet. She wishes to become a huntress. She trains in the forest secretly. Do not tell the king. She is the blond one. You must keep a very close eye on her for she has got her mother’s silent movements. You would look away for a single moment and she’d be gone. It’s happened many times. We have lost three guards because of it. You will find she is not as easy to please as Hilary but both girls are very kindhearted. Just like their mother. You’ll quickly grow protective over them for they, no offense meant to them, are about as smart as a post when it comes to danger.” The girl laughed as she started chopping up vegetables, rushing back and forth.

“Nikita. That name sounds familiar.” I muttered, looking down at my bread.

“Does it? Maybe it is because she’s named after a famous huntress. Maybe that was a sign.” The girl bit her lip as a tall dark-haired man strode in.

“Where is my bride? I wish to see her at once. She is over an hour late!” he yelled, eyes wide with rage.

“I do not know, sir. Last I checked she was in the dressing room.” The girl cowered lightly as her hands shook.

“I have looked there.” He sighed angrily and turned to leave when a fairy-like girl came in the room.

“No need to shout. I was simply in the gardens. Waiting for you.” She let her pale blue eyes drop to the ground as she slid around him, going for a chair as another girl came in, this one with black hair.
