Samuel's POV

Nikita left shortly after that and I could almost hear her planning ways to kill Klaire. At the moment, I knew I was.

How could she want to hurt innocent little creatures like Dimitri or Keegan?

“Klaire.” I called as mother cleared the plates.

“Yes Sammy?”

“What you said about dragons…did you really mean it?”

“With all of my heart. They are vicious creatures and every single one of them deserves to die. Is that all you needed?”

“Y-yes.” I stuttered, looking away quickly.

She smiled and patted my shoulder before going off with Ryker to practice. They both had swords so I would no doubt be helping one of them clean their cuts. Probably Ryker.

I went upstairs to check on Nikita, finding her sitting on the bed. She had Diantha in her lap and the rest of her dragons scattered around the room.

Dimitri was first to spot me and he quickly rushed over with an excited chirp, causing Keegan to look up and hop over.

“Hello boys.” I murmured, dropping to my knees to stroke their little heads. It was either I got on the floor or they climbed their way up. And they had very sharp claws that would not hesitate to tear into flesh.

“I want to hurt her. I want to rip her apart, limb by limb and watch her suffer.” Nikita mumbled, glaring at the floor.

“Please do not speak like that. You are much too innocent to do any of that.”

“I have killed someone, Samuel. I have hurt people. I have my ways. I am not as innocent as you think.” She smirked coldly, staring out the window now.

I heard the clashing of swords followed by Ryker’s groans of pains.

She was watching them, an eager look in her beautiful eyes.

I wondered how long it would take her to figure out her compulsion hadn’t worked. I still remembered our near kiss. I still remembered her admitting she wanted me.

It took everything I had not to kiss her, right on the spot.

“Samuel, would you please distract me before I kill her?” Nikita’s sweet voice broke me out of my trance, making me jump and start to pull out my sword.

She giggled at my reaction as she came to sit next to me on the floor.

“Can I see it?” She held her hand out, her eyes gazing at the hilt of my sword.

“You have seen it. We do not need you handling a sharp weapon, my lady.” I nearly scolded, shaking my head.

“You are such a bore sometimes, Samuel. Thank God you did not want to be a jester or your head would be on a wall.” She sighed and turned her attention to Diantha, humming a light tune.

“I am not a bore. I am protecting you.”

“From the big bad dagger? I am not a child, I think I can handle a sword.” she snapped, folding her arms across her chest.

I rolled my eyes and carefully slid the sword out.

She spent the next ten minutes turning the blade this way and that while Diantha purred in her lap.

“Alright, that’s enough.” I took the sword back and tucked it away, smiling at her disapproving noise.

“Will you play a game with me?” she asked suddenly, still slightly pouting.

“Of course, princess. Whatever you need.” I muttered, getting comfortable.

“I am going to ask you a question and you have to answer honestly. No lying. I will be able to tell if you are. Understand?” she warned, giving me a stern look.

I smiled and nodded, playing with one of Keegan’s paws.

“Good. First question, what is the most disgusting thing you have ever eaten?”

“Well, I was once forced to eat a snail.” I grimaced, shuddering at the memory.

“Baby.” she teased, fighting a smile.

“No. It was alive. And uncooked. I had to pick it up off the ground and eat it right out of its shell. It was horrible. So, do I get to ask you questions?”

“Go ahead.” She moved closer to me, sitting beside me and leaning against the bed.

“If you could kiss any person in the castle, who would it be?” I asked, hoping she would get the hint that I remembered. It was small but she was a clever girl.

“I cannot kiss anyone. I swore an oath.”

“I am not saying you actually have to kiss them. Just tell me, who would you kiss?”

“I would kiss…you. I trust you enough and you are one of my closest friends.” she covered up, biting her lip nervously as she shyly glanced at me.

“I would kiss you too.” I whispered, letting my gaze drop to her full pink lips.

“Samuel…oath.” she mumbled as we leaned into each other, our foreheads touching.

Oath. The stupid oath. Every princess was forced to swear an oath. The princess couldn’t kiss anyone before their husband. They couldn’t be romantically involved with someone besides their husband. And the penalty to breaking it was death to their lover and punishment from their husband for the rest of their lives.

“I don’t care. I remember everything, Nikita. And I remember how you said you wanted to kiss me and I know for a fact that you still want to.” I said confidently even though inside I was wondering if I was pushing her too far.

“I do. I really do. But first, I need you to tell me something.”

“Anything.”

“Tell me you love me.”
