Still Sam's POV
Sunlight poured into the tent, causing me to squint and lift my hand to block my face.
“Ah, there you are. We are readying the horses. Tell the princess her breakfast is out here. Yours as well.” The guard ducked back out, chuckling.
I looked down at Nikita sleeping, her face peaceful and her features as delicate as a flower’s petal.
“Princess, it is time to go.” I gently shook her awake, chuckling when she moaned and muttered about needing more time. “You can sleep on the horse. Come on.” I held out my hand as I got up.
“Carry me then.” She sleepily extended her arms, barely opening her eyes.
“What of breakfast?” I asked, sighing as I picked her up.
“If I get hungry, I shall eat. But until then just make sure I do not go into a ditch or a river or something that can kill me.” She fell slack as we went outside.
“If the princess wishes to sleep, she must ride on your saddle. She could fall off her horse again and we do not have the supplies to heal her at the moment.” The guard shrugged and took another sip of soup as Ryker handed me a small cup.
I rolled my eyes and lifted her onto my horse then settled into the saddle behind her. She leaned against me, mumbling.
“And where do you think you are going?” I called out as one of the guards started leading us away.
“The castle, of course. You cannot truly think we are still going to another village after what happened.”
Nikita
“I am not a child.” I reminded father after his lecture.
“Exactly. You should be making adult decisions. This-leaving the castle, especially without my permission-is not an adult decision. You know why you cannot leave.” His eyes softened and he wrapped his arms me, shaking his head slowly.
“I am sorry, father. I just needed a break from him. Why do I have marry him?” I asked, burying my face in his shoulder.
“For reasons I cannot tell you.” He pulled back, giving one last stroke to my hair before starting for the door.
“Would mother tell me?” I called out, bitterly looking down at my dress.
I saw him wince and regretted the words but kept my chin high. He shut the door behind him, leaving me in the darkness.
I pulled out the dragon eggs, tears slowly rolling down my cheeks. I picked up the white one, tilting my head in confusion. I had never heard of a white dragon egg. It wiggled in my trembling hands as I set it in the new case.
There were all beautiful. One was black with a few blood red stripes. Another was a dark blue one with a purple undertone. Then one was a pure red one with orange stripes. The last one was pastel yellow with red and black dots on the very top.
I took out a blanket and covered the glass case, hoping to keep them warm through the night. I tucked them back under the bed, biting my lip nervously as I spotted the black one wiggle.
I stood up and jumped when a knock echoed into the silent room. I opened the door and hesitated before letting Hilary in.
She spun around and threw herself at me, sniffling. “You are officially the most stupid person ever to live.” she muttered, squeezing me. She pulled back, tears in her eyes. “What were you thinking? You should have come to me first!”
“You were there. You could have stopped me if you wished but you didn’t.”
“I knew it you would not listen to me. You never have."
