I woke up with the sun in my face and the sound of voices all around me. I realized I was in the back of the van next to Jordan, I just didn't know why. Suddenly, Jordan must have felt that I was awake or something because he looked over at me and smiled before telling the guys I was up, "Hey, guys, Anne is awake!"
Everyone but Oliver, who was driving, looked back at me. Kitty answered my question before I even had to ask, "You were a little drunk and pretty tired last night so I came back here with you while the guys stayed at the bar for another hour or so. We're in Texas right now and we're about to stop and go walk around if you're up for it." He was smiling and seemed very happy and awake which made me being happy and awake all the much easier.
"Yeah, I'm all good." my voice still sounded tired and I was still adjusting to the light and being awake but it wouldn't take me more than ten minutes. We finally stopped and got out of the van, which felt great compared to being all cooped up in the van for god knows how long. The guys immediately start talking about finding somewhere to eat and start talking about pizza or other fast food restaurants that they saw on the drive here.
"I saw a vegan place like two blocks from here, I'm gonna walk and go check that out but you guys have fun." Oliver said as he started walking back the way we came, the way that the vegan place would be. I skipped up to catch up with him and didn't say anything to the guys about it.
"I'll go with you." I said cheerily, looking up at his tall, dark figure that seemed a bit sad.
"You're vegan?" he asked in a surprised tone, looking at me with a matching expression. Clearly he didn't remember all the times we've gotten food and mine was mostly meat products.
"No, I just really like vegan food and I'm really in the mood for it." I said still in my cheery mood. I don't know where it came from but I wasn't going to complain about being in a good mood.
It didn't take long for us to get to the vegan place and find somewhere to sit. Oliver didn't seem to want to talk very much and probably wasn't too happy that I tagged along. I ordered my food with Oliver, and sat silently as I drank my water and watched him look at his phone and act as if I wasn't there. I wasn't really one for taking peoples shit and I definitely considered ignoring me to be quite rude.
I grabbed Oliver's phone and locked it, putting it in my lap. "What the fuck was that for?" Oliver said in an aggravated tone.
I decided to stay calm and not yell back, "I don't like being ignored. I was trying to be nice coming here with you and you're being a dick."
"You were the one who yelled at me last night." He crossed his arms and sat back, and quite frankly, he looked like a child. I sighed, knowing that he was right. I did yell at him but he yelled first.
"I'm sorry about that, but I have to deal with Phil all the time protecting me from things that should be in my own hands. I don't need you doing it, too considering I barely know you and we can barely stand each other for more than ten minutes at a time." I mimicked his actions, crossing my arms and sitting back in the booth we were at.
"I do it because I care about you, not because I was given orders to take care of you. You're our manager and part of the team. The rest of the guys and I all consider you family because of that and we protect our family. Yeah, we're watching you for Phil too because he's our friend and you're his sister, it's a bro code kind of thing. But you need to face it, those guys are no good and I'm going to protect you from them and anyone else I think might hurt you." He leaned forward as he was speaking and everything he said was more and more intense the more he got into it. When he was done he took a deep breath and leaned back again.
I didn't really know how to react. I was glad he cared about me and the idea of the whole band thinking of me as family made me really happy. But there was a weird pang in my chest at the disappointment of Oliver thinking of me as a sister, when I thought this whole time that he was attracted to me and that he was jealous of these guys. It was almost like I wanted him to like me even though I wanted the exact opposite.
Part of me wanted to yell at him and tell him I could protect myself and I knew what guys were like. I wanted to tell him that Josh was a better man than he was and that I would be fine without him shadowing everything I did. I wanted to be angry with him but I wasn't and I don't think I could be after he just told me he genuinely cared about me regardless of whether or not it was in a family way.
After taking a moment or two to take in what just happened, I just whispered a "thanks" and we sat and ate our food in silence. I was kind of afraid of what Oliver and I were because despite his claim to think of me as family, I got a weird feeling around him and the vibe I got from him was different than the rest of the guys. I was easily gravitating more towards him than anyone else in the band. I got nervous around him a lot, too. I mean, he infuriated me most of the time but I could tell that there was another side to him that I didn't get to see. I had a feeling he was a very loving and caring guy and that was the version of Oliver I wanted to see, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Even though I was willing to try and get to know him better it seemed like he wanted nothing to do with me in most cases. I really couldn't tell if Oliver liked me or loved me or hated me. I thought maybe it was just because I'm the only girl on the tour and guys are just horny all the time. Maybe it was all just lust and he was looking to get laid but knew that he couldn't because of Phil. There were a million possibilities as to why Oliver treated me the way that he did. I don't know what we were or what we would be and that fact really scared me.
